Chapter Thirty-Six

"I'm screaming, do you hear me screaming? Because internally, I'm actually screaming, I swear on my cat's grave." Maggie was staring me up and down in my official wedding dress, albeit she was being a bit over-dramatic about it, I couldn't help but laugh.

Today is the wedding. Today I will no longer be 'Miss Adler', I will be Mrs. Parity.

A chill, which I wasn't sure was good or bad, ran up my spine just thinking about it.

"I can't believe you are getting married before me." She went on, "All this time I thought I'd have all the men after me and would have to make you maid of honor out of pity."

"Thanks for your confidence, Mags, I'm glad you're my friend." I spoke, feigning amusement. Though, despite Maggie trying to make light of the moment, I couldn't help but tremble thinking that in only a few minutes, I will be walking down the aisle in front of hundreds of people whose shoes are worth more than my life.

In the words of my soon-to-be-husband; "It'll be like a lenient walk down a block, with the hounds snapping as you pass." I snorted very unladylike, at least he hated these people as much as I do.

Earlier, Elias made a point to stay away from him. He has told me the guests, (who arrive peculiarly early for a wedding they weren't related too) don't appeal to the idea of the bride and groom seeing each other before they make their vows.

Part of me felt almost possessed enough to go and burst through the doors of his room, just to piss off everyone else.

This isn't their enchanting day, this is mine. I'll own it as I please.

Only because I respect Elias, which isn't saying much, I refrained myself from doing so.

Another thing Elias warned me about was Maggie. He had specifically asked me to not invite her, so, out of petty spite, and because again, this is my wedding too, I made her my maid of honor.

"You look gorgeous too, you know." I said, giving her a genuine thumb up. She was wearing a gown blanketed in pastels and jewelry, it flowed down to the floor like a smooth waterfall, meeting lace at the very bottom edges. I would have told her I preferred her gown to mine, but was interrupted by one of the maids, rushing in the room with a headpiece to complete my attire.

I swallowed as she placed a crown-like piece onto my carefully curled hair, which brought along the conformity of the moment. This is it. I'm getting married to the strangest young man I've ever met, but I haven't been welcomed by regret.

Not yet anyway.

More maids rushed in as they began to perfume me with scents so divine I've never smelt anything more appealing. Another maid handed me a bouquet of gorgeous flowers dipped in crushed emeralds and diamonds, obviously Elias's doing. I rolled my eyes at how dramatic he was, and yet, I couldn't help but admire how stunning and clearly not real, but still genuine the bouquet looked. They practically radiated the pride of Elias, and his obsession of everything magnificent.

I caught Maggie staring me up and down, she was silent, which for her was odd. I cleared my throat, "Are you okay, Mags?" I asked, "You look like you've just seen a ghost."

"Avril," I've never heard her voice so serious as now, "You look absolutely beautiful." She didn't follow up her statement with a joke about how she would look better, or how Elias would leave me for her. She just stood there, gawking at me in a way that almost made me uncomfortable.

I stepped off the stool I was standing on, and wrapped my gloved hands around her, nearly dropping the bouquet of flowers that I forgot I was holding. "Thank you, Maggie, seriously, for everything. None of this seems real, it's all so crazy." I scoffed, "You seem to be the only thing that is consistent in this crazy life of mine."
