Sorry for such a long chapter. It's a 2 parter. I hope y'all enjoy anyways!
He was being nice. Too nice.
Grinning wearily you gratefully took the warm cup of coffee from him as he slid into the seat next to you. "Thank you, Heavy.."
You took a sip and were delighted it was your favorite kind of coffee, too. He was a tad bit close for comfort but you didn't mind his company as normally you spent mornings before battle alone.
You decided to make conversation once he started to drum his fingers, fearing he was growing bored of you.
"So.. We've got a battle today. It's not usually right here on base, though." You began. He nodded.
"Before you came," he sighed, "our battles usually raged on Tuefort. These days we go elsewhere. Today though? Is an exception."
"And a good one at that. I've been getting tired traveling five hours to fight and then traveling all the way back here for the night." He nodded an agreement, standing up.
"Where're you headed..?"
"We have half of hour. I must clean my gun. Would you like to.. Maybe join me? Medic usually does. He is not here though." He twiddled his fingers nervously, avoiding your gaze and you smiled.
"I'd like that." It was strange. He's never been familiar with anyone else on base except Medic, who always kept him out of trouble and was a good friend. Recently, however, Medic's been on paid leave to discover a cure for a new disease running rampant through the base. He called it, before he left, "a strange disease that metastasizes in an environment of pure wheat. Yet, when eaten, it causes immune problems only science could decipher on a molecular level", which is why he left. He needed not only to find the perfect microscope, but to gather ingredients for his 'science fun-fest', as you called it. Soldier had fallen victim to this disease after attempting to eat one of the affected pieces of bread, so of course Medic couldn't help but wonder if it could infect other things too. His cover up to the administrator was that he was going to find a cure and needed to gather resources, but everyone on base suspected he just wanted to gather test subjects.
Passing his lab, trailing behind Heavy you couldn't help but wonder how his absence affected him.
"I miss Doctor." He stated before you could ask.
"We all do, Heavy. He's always stirring up troubles and it's strange not to be dragged away for shots every day." As you chuckled he sighed.
"He was more than mad-man."
"I wasn't saying that, I just-" before you could justify what you meant the garage doors before you screeched open loudly to reveal the weapons room. Heavy and you walked in silently, and you noticed Engineer was tuning his guitar sleepily. Upon closer inspection he had bags under his eyes and his goggles hung loosely around his neck. His clothes didn't look freshly ironed either, as they were wrinkly like they'd been pulled lazily out of a stuffed drawer. You cocked your head as you grabbed your gun.
"Are you alright Engie? Looks like you've had a rough night." Engineer jerked up, seemingly unaware that you and Heavy had arrived.
"Ah, uhm, yeah.. Nothing to worry about though. Just tired is all." He murmured.
"Don't suppose you two know whether or not Sniper is awake?" You heard Engie call. You looked to Heavy who was grabbing his minigun from the top of the cabinets and looked back at him.
