The sky was gutted its natural colors, dripping a blood red and felling thick raindrops on the tin roof over you. Dark clouds rolled and twisted around above and growled with malice. You quickly shoveled shotgun pellets into your gun and cocked it, shooting at the mangled mess of bones that resembled the corpse of what was once Medic. It screeched and fell away. The small wooden room you were in was becoming claustrophobic with the smell of dead zombies. Turning to Engineer, who was pummeling his dispenser with his wrench to make the darned broken contraption work, you groaned.
"They're communicating. They know we're here."
He nodded. "We best hold down fort. No use in moving, they're everywhere." A hand suddenly shot through a crack in the wood behind Engie, knocking his hard hat off his head and grabbing for him. He gave a shout and twirled around, knocking the hand away with his wrench. It severed, dropping to the floor next to him, and he took the pause to nail down some metal over the opening in the wood. You shot at zombie after zombie as they kept piling, multiplying and scratching to get into your holdup, groaning with an ardent desire for flesh. Warm flesh. Your flesh. You shivered, reloading your shotgun as Engineer nailed down more metal over any opening. The front entrance was blocked by Engie's dispenser, but it didn't seem like it would last much longer as more zombie Medics clawed at it.
"Engie..." you said with a gasp as you reached into your empty bullet bag. "Engie!!" You grew frantic as your hand squirmed around the bag looking for any bullet, but none came up. You looked to Engineer who was beating metal into his dispenser with his wrench, trying to fix it as fast as the zombies came and tore into it. It was slowly losing health and you realized you were doomed. "It's no use!" You called to him. You watched as his face, illuminated by the red setting sun, slowly began to form sweat droplets. His arms flexed as he threw swing after swing, fixing the thing best he could. He grunted in response to you, hitting the red machine at a fast pace, his grip on his wrench made his knuckles go white.
"We.." Thunk. "Can't!" Clang. "Give up!" Whack. He fell back next to you, giving up despite his statement. "You're right darling. It's no use. We're dead meat. Sitting ducks." He looked to you, ripping off his goggles. "I'm sorry (Y/n). I tried. I really did." He sighed, grabbing your hands and looking you in the eyes, his baby blue eyes reflecting fear and love.
"It's okay, Engie. I understand. We knew from the getgo we wouldn't survive long." His eyebrows turned up and his lip quivered.
"Sugar... There's something I need to tell you." You gripped his hands tighter, eyes threatening to spill floods.
"What?" You found your own lips quivering. Fear, sadness, anticipation. You could hear the dispenser slowly breaking down and saw smoke billowing from it. The zombies were almost through your defenses.
"If were going to die, I'll at least want you to know this. Ever since I met you I've loved you. Your laugh, your smile, how you do what you love, the way your body swings when you dance, everything." His voice was cracking with emotion. The dispenser crashed with a loud metal sound, and the two of you ripped your gaze from each other to see a horde of zombie Medics spilling into your base, shafts of blood red light spilling in behind them. Engineer steered your gaze back to him as he gently took your chin, turning you to him and pushing his lips against yours. Your eyes closed and the last thing you felt was your tears rolling down your cheek and Engineer's soft lips pressed against yours.
—— Extended Ending ——
"You should've seen the look on your face!" You laughed, bowling over and wheezing despite earlier circumstances. "You really thought we were going to die!" Engineer was redder than a tomato.
"Jesus, I didn't think we'd respawn! ...Medic didn't. And you, you thought we'd die too!" He took off his helmet and scratched his head, brows furrowed, face burning up.
"Medic didn't what?" A certain German's voice piped up and you and Engie looked at Medic with wide eyes. He simply stood in the doorway, a grin playing on his face. "I was wondering when you two lovebirds would respawn. The rest of us already died to my little creations, but I have the solution to our problem now." Engineer gasped angrily, his hands gripping into fists. "Just stay in the base and I'll have my monsters cleaned up in no time!" Medic smiled. Engie was fuming.
"You mean to tell us that those zombies are your doing?!" He shouted. Medic laughed, which turned quickly contagious and you found yourself giggling too at a hotheaded Engineer. Engie threw his hat on the ground with a shout, walking out of the respawn room tomato faced.
