James always had a hair tie on him. They started out for only Sirius. Once the Gryffindor girls found out, James would let his female friends use them too.
This worked out well for a while until one day in potions. Sirius's hair was getting all in his face. When Sirius grabbed James's wrist to get the hair tie he didn't have it.
James tried to explain that "Alice was having a really bad day and you wouldn't understand. She needed it."
Sirius of course being Sirius didn't talk to James for the rest of the day.
From then on, James carried two hair ties.
