When James and Lilly got together they were the power couple. Of course they came up with a ship name (Jily).
Of course the marauders went a different route. So when James and Lily had kissed for the first time in front of the marauders they all said "Awe. Lames. I ship it.". It was almost like they practiced. Which, in their case, they did. But that's a different story.
The Marauders called them that no matter the situation. And no one else used that nickname for them.
