I tiptoed across to Mr. Rakesh Ahuja cabin. Our vice president his secretary asked me to wait as Mr. Ahuja ended a call. Bonus day in Google altered the air in the office inside people felt huge anxiety and excitement but outside they have to pretend to be cool like it was any other day of course it was anything but that Bonus was management associate work for and the number define whether you are good or not. A zero bonus or a ridiculously low no could even mean a signal to leave the firm.
Mr. Rakesh Ahuja would communicate about the bonus to everyone in the superior team. I had a base of twelve lakh. I felt one lakh would be good translating to three month salary. Anything higher say a twenty or twenty five would make it like a rainbow in my sky.
"How you doing" Mr. Ahuja said staring at his screen he always tried to relax the people before he showed the number. He had the spreadsheet with all the bonus data on this computer.
"I am good how you are feeling sir" I said. "Like this is Christmas and everyone is waiting for their gift and I am feeling like a bit of Santa Claus today" he said
I smiled but only a little. In a superior office one always had to be poised and disciplined.
"Your bonus right" he said. I nodded. "How do you think you have done" he said "I guess I'll find out soon" I said.
He laughed. "Well like you around here. The worst rating in all your review come from you. You gave yourself a three almost everyone else gave you a five". I was speechless. I realized people had noticed my work and it make me happy.
"So your bonus for the year is five lakh" he said.
"What" I blurted out. I shouldn't have but I did. What did he just say?
"What do you mean 'What' like it" he said.
"Sorry how much did you say again" I said.
"Five lakh so your total compensation will be twelve lakh base plus five lakh bonus so you made seventeen lakh for the year" he said. I felt Dizzy.
"You also get a base increment of four lakh a year keep it up" he said.
"Well yeah thank you sir. I will do my best". I said my vocal cord are not cooperating with me this time. "You sounded funny" he said.
"Sorry but it is a very big number for me" I said.
He laughed "you deserve it. By the way it is one of the highest bonus at the management associate level this year.
"Thanks" I said.
"But I must add that the bonus number are confidential so don't disclose it" he said.
"Thank you sir" I said.
"Anav I have one more thing for you" he said. He handed me a envelop
"Sir" I said in bewilderment while looking at the letter.
"It's your promotion letter Anav. You are promoted as a management head in Google California branch. You have to leave in three months" He said.
While looking at the letter. I only get a glimpse of Anya smiling face. How can I leave her alone? I can't stay without her. I made my decision.
"Sir thank you for the proposal but I cannot accept it" I said while looking at the letter.
"Anav what are you saying. It's a golden opportunity. Only a few got this chance you are going to work in the head office and you are rejecting it. I personally recommended you. For this post" he said.
"Sir thank you for your appreciation but I cannot accept this offer" I said. "Anav take some time and think about it" he said.
"Yes sir" I said.
"Please go back to your work" he said.
