I unlocked the door and shrugged out of my jacket as soon as I stepped inside my house, but my eyebrows shot up at the sight of Toni and Asad sitting at my table.

I couldn't help my eyebrows from shooting up at the box of beer in front of them.

"Hey, King," Toni greeted, "pop a squat."

"Mind me asking why and how you two got in here?" I deadpanned, folding my arms over my chest.

"Don't reprimand us, King train," Asad said, throwing his hands up as he leaned back in his chair.

"Santy, the whole city of Seattle knows where your spare key is," Toni said, rolling his eyes.

"Oh yeah?"

"Oh, most definitely," Asad said, "third biggest rock outside, because out of us, you have the third biggest co-"

I shot my eyebrows up at him and he fell out into laughter. "You know I'm joking."

"I know you are," I said, shooting him a grin.

"Well you don't have to be cocky about it," he said, rolling his eyes.

I shrugged and leaned back in my chair, catching the beer that Toni slid across the table to me.

"You never answered my question as to why you're here," I said, spinning my finger around the top of the can.

Toni shot me a blank look, his lips parted. "Saturday nights are guys nights."

My eyebrows went into a furrow. "Oh, yeah," I said, "I've been having a hard time keeping up with the days."

"No, something's messing with your head," Asad said, shaking his head, "I know you better than anyone."

"Would it happen to be a lady messing with both of your heads?" Toni asked, shooting me a wide smirk.

I raised my eyebrows for a split second, leaning back up towards the table to place my beer back on it. "Funny."

They both shot me grins.

"No," I answered, "it's not."

"Speaking of ladies bothering the King," Toni said, "that little girlfriend of yours from however many years ago, goddamn she's hot."

I just looked up at him, flexing my jaw muscle.

"I love seeing you get defensive over her."

"Well, she's engaged, so," I mumbled, leaning back in my chair again. I popped open my beer and tipped it back, taking a long drink of it.

Asad's eyebrows shot up. "No she isn't?"

"Yes she is," I said, "she's engaged to Derek Novak."

"He's old as dirt," Toni said, eyebrows furrowed together, "I guess she has a thing for sugar daddies."

"You're thinking of David Novak," I said, "Derek is his son."

"Well considering how old David is, Derek is probably out of her age range as well."

I couldn't help but to chuckle, throwing my beer back again. "No, he's her age."

"I thought balls shriveled up by then," Asad whispered, making me chuckle yet again.

"Okay, stop with the dramatics, he's only sixty," I said.

"And you're not too far from there yourself, King," Toni teased, reaching across the table to give my shoulder a good punch.

"Watch your mouth," I warned, shooting an eyebrow up at him.

"I'm just kidding," he said, "you're not as old as him."

"Let's please get off of the topic of the Novaks and her," I said.

They both nodded.

"Hey! I have a good topic," Asad said, tipping back his beer before putting it down on the table.

"Okay," I said.

"Our annual men trip," he said, "it's coming up."

I just nodded. "This is true."

"Are we roughing it this time?" I asked, "because last time, if I do recall correctly, Toni got poison ivy and we had to rough it at the Ritz."

Toni threw his head back with a laugh. "I remember that!"

"Yes, we're going to rough it this time," Asad said, "I mean, full on woods, the King hunting cabin kind of deal."

I just nodded, my bottom lip jutted out. "Sounds like a plan."

"Cheers!" Asad said, holding up his beer, "to being single!"

"We cheers to this every time," Toni said.

"Well, we are single," I said, "so cheers."

I opened the door and walked inside, pursing my lips together at the sight of dinner on the table.

Derek walked out from the pantry, looking down at the wine he had in his hands.

I couldn't help the small smile on my face, smiling as I grabbed it from him.

He jumped and looked over at me, a confused look on his face.

I smiled and handed the wine back to him. "It's one of my favorites."

He smiled and pressed a kiss to my cheek. "I thought you didn't get off until eight?"

I sat down at the table, watching as he popped open the wine bottle. "He let me off early."

He nodded. "Pretty nice guy?"

I nodded. "Yeah, he's great."

He just nodded. "I've never heard of him, so I don't know whether to be on the lookout or not."

I smiled. "He's a nice guy, super polite. I swear."

He smiled down at me. "I believe you."

I bit down on my bottom lip and looked down at my dinner. "It looks delicious, yet again."

He smiled as he poured us two glasses of wine. "I try my hardest."

I watched as he walked over to the table, setting my glass in front of my plate and doing the same with his. He sat down and pursed his lips together at me, smiling a tight smile.

"Let's eat, I'm starving."

He picked up his fork but before he could take a bite, his phone began to ring.

I looked up at him and furrowed my brows together.

"Hello?" He said, standing up as he walked into the kitchen.

I watched him pace around slowly.

"Yeah, I'll be right over." He pulled his phone away from his ear and ended the call, grabbing his coat.

"I'm sorry, babe, something came up with the animal sanctuary," he said, shooting me a weak smile.

I just nodded, biting down on my bottom lip. "Okay."

He leaned down to press a kiss to my lips. "I'll be back as soon as I can."

He shot me another concerned look before stopping in his tracks, his eyebrows furrowed down at me.

"What's wrong?"

I stood up, shaking my head. "Nothing. Go on."

I felt terrible for the rising suspicion with each passing day. I'd never felt for a second that Derek was terrible enough to cheat on anyone, let alone me.

But I knew men- they made excuses.

"Something's wrong, tell me the truth," he said, eyebrows furrowed together as he lightly grabbed my wrist.

"Why would something happen to go wrong at nearly eight o'clock, Derek," I said, letting out a sigh.

His eyebrows went into a furrow. "I can't really control when something goes wrong."

I rolled my eyes and pulled my wrist away from him.

"Please tell me you're not thinking what I think you're thinking," he said, and I could hear the genuine concern in his voice.

I made no comment, just leaned against the counter.

"Adora," he said, his voice a low hum, "tell me you're not thinking what I think you're thinking."

"I know what you're thinking," I said, folding my arms over my chest.

"So are you thinking that?" He asked, eyebrows furrowed together.

"I don't think I have to answer that question."

He let out a puff of air, a small chuckle following it. "Give me one good reason why I'd even think about-"

"I know men!" I yelled, "you make excuses!"

"No, you know boys," he argued, "boys make excuses."

"That must've been a hit to your ego."

He chuckled and leaned his head back. "Why would I cheat on you?"

"Because I'm a handful," I said, pushing myself off of the counter, "even you'd admit that."

"So that gives me validation to be unfaithful to you?" He asked, furrowed brows, "that gives me validation to go back on everything I told you I wouldn't do?"

"You're a man, that's all I'm saying."

"And like I said, only boys are immature enough to do shit like that."

I laughed. "You and I both know that's a bold faced lie."

"Listen, I don't know what other guys you've dealt with in the past and I don't know what they did to you, but you've got to figure out that I'm not like them and you've got to figure it out before I marry you."

My eyebrows went into a deep furrow. "That's a lot coming from the man that reiterates to not bring up the past."

He sighed, shaking his head. "I've got to go."

And I watched as he slammed the door behind him.

I wrapped my jacket around myself as I stood outside of Brenna and Zayn's place, waiting on them to open the door.

Brenna opened and it and her eyebrows went into a furrow. "Hey, love, what's up?"

I smiled and she pulled me inside. "Where's Derek?"

"Hey, Adds," Zayn greeted, shooting me a smile from the stove.

"Hey, Zayn," I said, "and he's at one of his places."

"Isn't it a bit late?" Zayn asked, cocking an eyebrow up at me.

"It's fine," I said, shrugging, "it smells great in here."

"Thanks," he said, "did you eat, or did Derek leave before you did?"

I pursed my lips together. "I ate."

He just nodded. "Okay. I'm going to wash these dishes and run and take a shower."

Brenna smiled and led me into the living room, taking a sip of her wine. "So what happened?"

I shrugged out of my jacket. "Something at his animal sanctuary went wrong and he had to go check it out."

I'd realized on the way over here that I absolutely messed up. I'd basically told Derek I was convinced he was cheating, when I knew good and well he wasn't, and wouldn't ever think of it.

Derek was too good of a guy to do something so terrible.

She nodded slowly, flipping through the channels. "Sorry, love. I hate when Zayn's gone, too."

"Heard that, sappy," Zayn sang, making Brenna smile.

"That was my other personality," she replied.

He chuckled and I couldn't help but to smile. It was kind of hard for me to think that five years ago, they wouldn't dare express their feelings for eachother.

And five years ago, I wouldn't dare express my feelings for a man twice my age.

I bit down on my bottom lip and looked over at Brenna.

She watched as Zayn walked upstairs, her lips pursed together. As soon as he made it upstairs, she looked over at me. "So what's wrong?"

I furrowed my brows together. "Huh?"

"You're not just sad about being alone," she said, "something's wrong. My best friend sense went off when you walked in."

I just smiled and looked down. "I'm good, Bren."

She sighed. "No you're not."

I looked up and over at her, my lips pursed together. "I messed up, Bren."

She urged me to continue on, nodding.

"His phone started ringing and he walked into the kitchen, and I assumed so it was so I couldn't hear, so then, I accused him of not always being in meetings and doing things associated with work," I said.

"So basically you accused him of being unfaithful." She took another drink of her wine, looking over at me. "Right?"

I sighed, resting my chin in my palm. "Yeah, pretty much. And then he left."

"Well, is he coming back?"

"I mean, I assume so," I said, "but can I stay over tonight?"

"So you can hide from your problems," she said, finishing my sentence for me.

I shot her a weak smile.

She smiled and nodded. "I'll get the guest bedroom ready for you. But tomorrow, you and I are going back to your place and you're facing your problems. Got me?"

I smiled as she stood up.

"Make yourself at home," she said, resting a comforting hand on my shoulder.

I realized, in that moment, that I'd messed up, but I'd always have a best friend to help me through it.
