The Comatose Brother

Third Person's POV

Leo had gotten hurt. Again. And was in a coma. Again. And Mikey was feeling at fault.

You see, the four brothers were out on patrol earlier, just doing a quick scan of the city. But, they had a run in with Footbots, Fishface, and TigerClaw.

Apparently, Shredder's patience had run thin. He had wanted the turtles, dead or alive. So, the Shredder had upped his game.

More than one hundred Footbots had surrounded the turtles. The four brothers had stood back to back, weapons at the ready, muscles tensed, and ready for action.

The four brothers had fought for their lives, but Mikey guessed it was not enough.

The three younger brothers had heard his scream and knew immediately that they would have to postpone their fight to care for their Onīsan.

Raph, Donnie, and Mikey had fought their way to Leo, the sight before them making them pale.

Leo had been beaten terribly by Shredder, enabling him unconscious and bleeding with multiple bruises and gashes.

Raph had held off as many footbots as he could while Mikey and Donnie had taken Leo's arms around their necks and ran to the next rooftop.

It was not until they have gone to the sewers did Mikey realize Leo had gotten hurt because his Onīsan was trying to defend him.

Leo had blocked the blow coming from Shredder that was meant for Mikey.

Tears had welled up in Mikey's eyes while he recalled the fight. He had come to terms that it had been his fault that his big brother had gotten hurt.

When they had reached the lair, Donnie had immediately gotten to work on treating his brother's wounds in the infirmary.

Splinter had sensed the dread coming from his sons and had left his quarters to see what had happened. He had been devastated with the fact his eldest son had been badly injured on their patrol topside.

Don had told Splinter that Leo would survive, but that did nothing to can the dread and worry streaming off of the four beings in the room.

Afterward, about three hours later, Splinter had suggested his remaining conscious sons get some rest after this stressful event.

Donnie had complained about needing to watch over Leo, but Mikey had volunteered in his stead.

What Mikey really wanted to do was to make sure his Onīsan did not die because of him.

Donnie hesitated, then left saying to notify if there was any change. Mikey had agreed, then settled in the chair next to Leo's cot as the others left to their quarters.

That was how Mikey was now, watching over Leo with guilt consuming him.

"I'm sorry, Leo," Mikey apologized.

Mikey looked at the unconscious Leo and sighed. His gaze landed on the linked fingers of his and Leo's hands.

"This is all my fault," Mikey whispers, "If I had only been paying attention, and didn't goof off then you would be awake right now. You'd be telling me it wasn't my fault. But I know it is! Please, Leo! Please... Wake up. I need my Ani."

Mikey sobbed and laid his head on Leo's bandaged chest, tears streaming out of his eyes. He just wanted his big brother to wake up. He wanted Leo to hold him and tell him everything is okay.

"N-Not... your... fault."

Mikey's head shot up and his eyes widened when he saw Leo looking at him through half-lidded eyes.

"H-Hi..." Leo whispered hoarsely with a smile.

Mikey grinned with tear-filled red eyes. He shot up off the chair and raced to the infirmary door.

"GUYS!! GUYS, HE WOKE UP!!" Mikey shouted happily.

He ran back to Leo and hugged him as gently as he could. He sobbed on Leo's chest as he finally felt Leo's arms wrap around him.

Pounding footsteps were heard outside of the infirmary. Mikey heard happy shouts as Donnie, Raph, and Master Splinter appeared near the cot. But Mikey did not care. He had his Ani and he was happy.

"How do you feel, Leo?" Donnie asked.

Leo looked away from Mikey. His eyes trailed to Donnie and he smiled.

"I'm glad to be awake. Water?" Leo replied.

Raph ran to fill a cup of water, then returned and prompted Mikey to get off of Leo. Mikey's arms tightened around Leo and he buried his head deep into Leo's shoulder.

"Come on, Mikey. I gotta give Leo his water," Raph said.

Mikey shook his head. This brought a few confused and worried frowns to the Hamato family. Leo looked down at Mikey and rubbed Mikey's back.

"Give us a minute? And leave the water here," Leo told his family.

Raph nodded and set the water on the cart next to the cot. Donnie, Raph, and Splinter walked out of the infirmary.

Leo gently lifted Mikey off of him. He looked at Mikey and saw his red eyes and tears.

Mikey sniffled and wiped his face from his tears. Leo looked at Mikey through his half-lidded eyes.

"What's wrong, Mikey?" Leo asked.

Mikey looked at Leo with the saddest eyes Leo has ever seen. Leo frowned worriedly and reached to grabbed Mikey's hand.

Mikey grabbed Leo's hand and watched Leo scoot over to make space on the cot. More tears streamed down Mikey's face as he crawled on the cot next to Leo. Leo wrapped his arms around Mikey. Mikey laid his head on Leo's chest.

"This is all my fault," Mikey mumbled.

Leo sighed sadly but urged Mikey to continue, wanting him to release everything he held back after the battle.

"You got hurt because I wasn't paying attention. I goofed off during patrol and you and the guys paid the price for it. Then I didn't pay attention during the battle and you got hurt because of me," Mikey sobbed.

Leo let out a small smile and tilted Mikey's head up to meet eye to eye.

"Mikey, it wasn't your fault. I got hurt protecting you-"

"Exactly-!"

"Let me finish," Leo said sternly.

Mikey sighed and nodded.

"Okay," Leo said softly, "I got hurt protecting you because that's my job. I'm your big brother and I can't stand to see any of you hurt. It's not your fault, baby bro. It's Shredder's. Okay?" Leo said.

Mikey hesitated, then nodded with a small smile. He nuzzled his head on Leo's chest and sighed happily as he felt Leo's arms wrap around him. Leo kissed Mikey's forehead.

"I love you, Li'l Mikey."

"I love you, too, Ani."
