Dawn came very fast the next day. I was already up and sitting by the fire, waiting for the chief and his son to come out of their rooms. I didn't sleep much. The thought of what this village has gone through kept me up. The chief came out of his room first. "You are already up?" He asked. I nodded and smiled a small smile. "I didn't sleep much. I guess I am used to sleeping beside Darius. " I said. The chief chuckled. "You must have been with this dragon of yours for a while." said the Chief. "Yes. It has been a while. Darius protects me." I said.
Ben comes out a few minutes later with a yawn. "I am sorry it took me so long to get up pa." said Ben. "Don't make excuses boy. Now hurry up and eat. Girl, go get your dragon." said the Chief. "My name is Maria sir." I said standing up and going to the door. "We will meet you and your dragon at the village gate. We will be there shortly." said the Chief and I left the cabin and went to find Darius.
I found Darius on the hill over looking the village. He was standing up and looking at the village. "There you are Maria. I was starting to get worried." said Darius. "You were worried about me Darius?" I asked. "Of course I was. Did you get a meeting with the chief of this village?" asked Darius. I nod and smile. "Yes. They are waiting for us at the village gate. The chief wants to meet you." I said. "Then we shouldn't keep him waiting. Come." said Darius and he started towards the village gate. It didn't take us but a few moments to get the village gate. The chief and Ben were standing there waiting.
Darius growled a bit when he saw the chief but he didn't do anything else. The chief backed away uncertain while Ben looked entranced. "This is your dragon girl?" asked the chief. I sighed and nodded. "Yes. This is Darius. Darius, this is the chief and his son Ben." I said gesturing to the two men in front of me. "You would help us to overthrow the king?" asked the chief, though to me it sounded more like a demand. "I am not going to do it for you. I will do it for Maria here. " said Darius nodding his head towards me. Behind the chief and his son, villagers were starting to gather and stare at Darius in wonder.
"Girl. How did you tame this dragon?" demanded the chief. "I didn't tame him. Like I said last night. Darius saved my life."I said. "The king's men shot her in the back with an arrow. I saved her life." said Darius. The chief looked at Darius, then at me, before walking around Darius as if he were inspecting him. Darius growled deep in his throat in disapproval at the chief's rude behavior. "You'll have to forgive my father. He just wants to save my mother." said Ben quickly. Darius looked at Ben. "What happened to your mother?" asked Darius. "His mother was taken by the king. " I said answering for Ben. Darius nodded before spreading his wings then tucking them back in against his side. He was showing off a bit and that caused me to smile.
"You really think that you can help us to overcome the king and his knights?" asked the chief. "I will try my best. That is all I can promise. It would help if you could get a knight to get a bit of training in tactics and defense." said Darius. The chief chuckled a bit and turned to Ben. "Does that knight still live in the swamp?" asked the chief. "I don't know pa. He tends to come and go. " said Ben. "You guys know a knight?" I asked. "He came to us with several bad injuries. He said he didn't want to work for the king anymore and that when he tried to leave, the king attempted to have him killed." said the chief.
"You'll probably want to talk to him yourself. I can take you to his house. Will you want to come as well Darius?" asked Ben. "No. I will wait here. Maria can talk to him. If he does not come at first then I will go and talk to him myself." said Darius turning towards the hill. "Where are you going Darius?" I asked. "To hunt." said Darius and he took off with a mighty leap almost knocking the chief over. "Ben. Take the girl to the knight. " said the chief and he walked away with a huff. "Is he always like that?" I asked. "It got worse since the king took my mother. He used to be kind. Now it's like he is always angry." said Ben. "Well we better get going then. We don't want to make him any madder." I said and Ben nodded and we left the village heading towards the swamp.
