Roman awoke in the horrid motel bed alongside Stefan and Caroline who were on top of each other.
"Could you not?"
Roman sighed sitting up.
Apparently the twins mother had failed to turn Stefan's emotions back, with the amount of beatings she let them go through Roman wasn't shocked.
Suddenly there was a knock on the door and Caroline stood opening the door.
"Towels!"
Damon stood at the door, he shot Caroline in the stomach multiple times with a vervain dart gun before turning to Roman.
"Sorry baby brother."
Damon pointed the gun between Roman's eyes, and then everything went dark.

"Stefan? What happened?"
Caroline whispered weakly.
"We got caught sunshine."
Roman growled out angrily.
If there was something Roman hated more than anything it was getting caught.
"Knock, knock."
Elena's annoying voice snapped Roman out of his angry thoughts.
"Let me guess, humanity patrol was your idea."
Caroline glared at the girl as Roman stood stumbling to the door.
"Remember that time Jeremy died and you turned off your humanity and tried to kill the prom queen, aka your best friend Bonnie? I forget. Stefan, was that before or after she killed some waitress for no reason?"
Caroline smirked from where she rested her head against the bed frame.
"I think it was after."
Stefan smirked weakly.
"I just find it so amusing Elena is trying to tell you how to deal with the death of a loved one. I mean, she knows better then anyone all she does is push things off. She makes things easier for herself because she is weak, and even if she has the strength and the fangs she'll always handle things like a weak human."
Roman grinned, teeth bared, at Elena through the bars on the door.
Little did Roman know Stefan's humanity was in fact on, and he warned everyone that Roman would say the nastiest things to them when his switch was off.
Though Elena knew he would do it she was still shocked at how hateful the words came out.
"I'm not here to preach, I'm just here to show her this."
Elena held an envelope through the bars that Roman snatched passing it back to Caroline.
"This letter from your mom arrived at our dorm just a few days after her funeral. Apparently there was something she wanted to tell you."
Roman scoffed rolling his eyes as he let the door hold his weight.
"Look real to you?"
Stefan asked the blonde.
"Her impeccably perfect handwriting? Yep. I remember when she taught me how to write my name in cursive."
Caroline stared at the letter intensely making Roman bang his head against the bars.
She really did suck at having no emotions.
"So, what, am I supposed to read this and snap back to sad, pathetic, motherless Caroline? Burn it!"
Caroline suddenly snapped making Roman grin.
"What?"
Stefan furrowed his eyebrows making Roman do the same.
"Did I say, 'stand there and look stupid?' No. I said, 'Burn it!'"
Caroline hissed.
"Well maybe you should read it first."
Stefan gulped.
"And why would you care brother?"
Roman turned his head with a deadly glare.
"I mean, what happens if eventually she gets her humanity back and she hates me for destroying the last thing her mom wanted to say to her?"
Roman knew something was wrong by the way Stefan was ranting.
Roman knew no humanity Stefan just as well as he'd always known Stefan.
"Did those words seriously just come out of your mouth? God!"
Caroline's face contorted in disgust.
"You heard her,"
Roman held eye contact with his twin as tension built up.
"Burn it."
Stefan hesitated and that's all it took for Roman to know.
"Sorry Elena."
Stefan shook his head walking over to burn the letter.
"I know what you're up to Elena."
Roman whispered to her through the bars with a dark chuckle.
"It won't work."
Elena however didn't respond, she just watched the letter burn.
"You know what Caroline it is just like Elena to have these childish fantasies isn't it? Maybe the letter will save Caroline, Maybe I'll pretend I can actually give birth to babies and have a normal family, and I can get a job without having to move and start over every five years. I can operate on my patients without wanting to feed on them."
Roman smirked as he heard Caroline's chuckle behind him.
Elena's eyes welled with tears as Roman grinned.
"You've always been a real dick when you're hungry Roman Lee."
Roman suddenly noticed Damon and his angry glare.
"I'm just being honest brother, by the way how does it feel knowing you can't ever give he what she really wants? That you will never be enough for her."
"Shut up Roman!"
Elena shouted, her eyes watering from anger.
Roman merely snickered, still as close to her face as he could be through the cell.
"I'm just telling you what you're too afraid to accept Elena. You have never wanted this life, you don't have thick enough skin."
Roman took another dig at the girl.
"You can play fantasy-land with Damon all you want, but in this life, the one where you're like us, you'll always be settling, and it's just so sad.
So sad that poor little Elena has such a terrible life. When really the reason she has such a bad life is entirely her own fault-"
"I can't listen to this."
Elena stormed away from a smug Roman.
"Elena."
Damon called softly as Roman laughed sinisterly.
"Uh-oh, did I strike a nerve big brother? My bad."

"Ugh it's like a million degrees in here."
Caroline sighed, sweat dripping off all three vampires.
"Tell me about it."
Stefan panted.
"You two were so quiet earlier I thought you were going soft."
Roman grinned, thinking back to his attack on Elena.
"I was enjoying the show, I don't know about Stefan."
Caroline and Roman looked expectantly to the boy.
"Just hard to get a word in."
Stefan shrugged tiredly.
Caroline took off her jacket as she sighed in relief.
"Oh Caroline do you hear that?"
Roman smirked at his twin.
"I know you hear it Stefan. That- that's your heart beat big brother."
Roman chuckled as realization washed over Caroline.
"You're nervous. When did you flip it back?"
Caroline growled.
"Doesn't matter."
Roman sighed banging his head against the bars.
"Roman, Roman."
The Salvatores eyes flashed up seeing a pale Enzo on the other side of the door.
"Enzo! Lorenzo what happened?"
"Some mutt came and took a bite of me."
Enzo mumbled.
"No, no. This isn't right."
Roman growled hitting his head against the door.
"Get out of my head!"
Roman screamed, his eyes snapping open and locking with Damon's.
"Sorry baby brother, but you have to watch him die all over again."

Suddenly Enzo was back in front of Roman his eyes falling shut.
"Lorenzo, Enzo!"
Roman tried to fight the horror in his chest as it heaved up and down.
"Enzo!"
Roman shouted as his skin turned grey.
"Enzo no!"
Roman fell to the ground in terror as he looked at Enzo's body.
"It's isn't real. It isn't real."
Roman reminded himself.
"Roman please love!"
Roman could hear Enzo's scream from Augustine.
"Enough!"
Roman exclaimed shaking his head.
"Your mind games aren't going to work Damon."
Roman smirked.
"Stop being stubborn Roman."
Damon hissed through the bars.
"Stop trying to decided how I live."
Roman growled back.
"Enzo proposed, you remember?"
Damon questioned as Roman froze.
"H-He didn't propose-"
"But he promised he would. Imagine that you two finally getting married after all these years. Maybe you settle down and adopt some lunatic kid. You get to be together, for good this time. "
Damon chuckled drawing a small laugh from Roman.
Just from that simple thought Roman's walls came crashing down.
Just the simple thought of being with Enzo forever was enough to bring Roman back from the edge.
