Mild Language

"Are we really doing this right now?" You asked exasperatedly.
Steve gave you a hard look from across the kitchen and crossed his arms in defiance.

"Apparently there's no better time to do it. This is the first time I've seen you in a week. It's like we're roommates rather than an actual couple."

You rolled your eyes. You had been dating Steve for a good two years and just recently managed to find an apartment together. Unfortunately, the both of you found it wasn't really working out. You had the night shift at the hospital and he worked during the day. There was a lot you had to bite your tongue about, from him coming home beaten and bloody to not coming home at all. You knew what kind of things America's Golden Boy had to do and you never uttered one complaint about it, choosing to support him instead. And so, it was mind-blowing that Steve would actually accuse you of not wanting to spend time with him when he was out 24/7 with a high percentage rate of getting himself killed.

"Steve, we talked about this. You have your work and I have mines. It's not a big deal—"
"It is! It is a big deal. If you wanted to be in this relationship, it would be a big deal to you."

You tossed the pot you had been washing into the sink before finally turning to face him, anger simmering in your chest.

"First of all, who said I didn't want to be in this relationship?" You snapped.

"To me, it really seems like it."

You were more than furious as he turned to stalk into the living room. He had genuinely hurt you by assuming that you didn't want to be with him. Of course, you weren't expecting it to be perfect, but it seemed like arguments were becoming the norm for you two.

"Fine. Since apparently I don't want to be in a relationship, I'll-"
You had made your way into the living room and immediately cut off as he quickly snapped something closed and tucked it into his pocket. You didn't have to ask what it was and you could the see the guilt clear in his eyes as you clenched your jaw in anger.

"Guess I'm not the only one."
"Wait, Y/N-"

You stalked into the bedroom, throwing random clothes into your bag and turning to leave when Steve appeared in the doorway, holding the frame to block you.

"Move."
"Y/N, please. I can explain."
"Well, explain to someone who wants to hear it."
You tried to push past him, but it was like trying to walk through a rock wall.

"Rogers, so help me, if you don't move-"
"Y/N, don't go. Please, don't go."
There was a wild look in his eyes and you could tell that he was on the verge of crying. You forced yourself to look away.
"I love you, Steve. But, I need some time."

His arms hung limp at your words and you stepped around him, walking out of the apartment without looking back. You knew if you did, you wouldn't have the strength to leave. As you walked out of the building, you felt a little disoriented from what had just happened. A strong sense of loneliness overtook you and you pulled out your phone to call Tony. He was your best bet at finding a place and you thanked your lucky stars you were related to him.

"How's my favorite cousin doing?"
"I'm your only cousin, Stark."
"Could say the same about you, Stark."
You rolled your eyes as he snickered quietly.

"Yeah, yeah. Look, I need a place to stay. Got anything for me?"
"Of course, I do. You and Cap going away for a weekend or something? Wait. Did he even get that approved? Hey, Nat! Do you know if-"

"Tony, we had a fight. It...didn't go very well."

After you explained everything that had happened just a few minutes ago, Tony was silent.

"Tony?"

You winced as a stream of well-detailed cursing erupted from the receiver and went on for a few minutes.

"Catch your breath."
"I told you he was no good for you. What did I—"
"I don't need a lecture right now. I need a place to stay." You interrupted.

"Don't be dumb. You're staying with me. Come down to the Tower." You opened your mouth to snap at him for calling you dumb when you took a step back and stumbled right into the street. Oblivious to your surroundings, it took you a couple of seconds to realize where you were.

That was all the time it took.
You felt it before you saw it.

"Y/N? Hello? Y/N!"

The Next Morning

Steve stared at his phone as it rang loudly.

He had missed three calls the previous night. Two from Tony, one from Natasha. Steve knew that the only person you could go to was Tony because he was your only family and as one of your closest friends, Natasha would be in the loop as well. He didn't exactly feel like dealing with them, so he went to sleep.
Now, Bucky was calling.

Steve sighed before picking up.

"Hello?"
"What the fuck is wrong with you? Why aren't you answering your phone?"
"Because I know what you're all going to say! What more do you want me to do, Buck?"

"How about stop being a prick for once in your damn life?" Bucky snapped. Steve was taken aback by how angry he was. You and Bucky certainly weren't close friends, but friendly enough for him to call and chew Steve out?

"I didn't answer so you could insult me, Bucky. What the hell do you want? Is that her crying? Why's she with you?"

A mix of emotions swept through his stomach as he heard faint sobbing coming from the other line. Guilt and jealousy were the main two.

"That's Wanda crying. And maybe if you weren't the worlds biggest dumbass, you'd know why." Bucky said harshly before hanging up.

"Wh-?"

Steve couldn't figure out what the hell was going on.
Wanda crying?
Tony and Natasha calling him?
Bucky yelling?
Decision final, he called Tony, hoping the billionaire would answer and clear things up.

"Steve."
"Tony?"
"What do you want?"
Steve scoffed.
"You called first, remember?"
"Yeah, well. I was doing it out of common courtesy. Thought you'd wanna know your girlfriend got into a car accident and is currently fighting for her life. But, I guess it's not a big deal since you couldn't bother answering."

Tony hung up, leaving Steve in a horrible daze.

He didn't know how he did it. He didn't even know how he knew where you were but he found you. He found you pale and barely breathing, the machine around you working to keep you alive as your chest fluttered from the strain. The others were there and he ignored them to collapse next to your bed and hold your cold hand, tears already pouring down his cheeks.

"Y/N?"
"Save it, Cap. The only family I had left and you went and screwed that up." Tony spit out bitterly.

Steve didn't blame him for feeling that way. He felt it was all his fault too as he silently begged for you to open your eyes, to talk to him. Do something to assure him you were okay.
But he could see that you were far from it.
And Steve, usually so sure of himself, had no idea what to do without you.
