Virgil edged his way towards Emma nervously, only for her to shuffle away from him.
"Emma, it's okay, you won't get hurt,"
She flinched. She spoke in a whisper,
"Wh-who did this to you?"
"No-one, it runs in my blood,"
"How do you get it out?"
He laughed. She managed to force a smile for his sake; but she wasn't joking.

"Did it hurt?"
This caught him off guard.
"Huh?"
"Getting the wings. Did it hurt?"
He thought back to the immense pain of the sickness, if he moved in the slightest way it would trigger off a throbbing pain through all of his muscles. But the sickness was nothing compared to the wings.

During the last day or so of his sickness his back felt like it was getting ripped apart and it burned hotter than molten lava. But the worst was his full transformation. The time when the wings grew out of his back. No blood was shed, but it felt like he was growing two metal rods from his back.

Emma noticed his hesitation and sudden silence and took that as a strong yes.

"Was it worth it?" she asked, barely audible now.
Yet another question that caught him off guard.
"I'm not sure. I mean, yeah, they're cool and stuff but I always have to hide them, so I don't see the point in having them. At least Logan doesn't have to wear that stupid coat anymore,"
"That's not what I meant,"
"Then what did you-"
"-being gone for five years. Leaving Patton, leaving Roman, leaving your home-"
"-leaving you,"
She looked down.

He knew Emma well. He knew she didn't want to touch on the subject of leaving, knowing what memories would come up. He answered her question instead.

"I got to know where I came from. I learned about my family. But the years were long and I really missed all of you guys. And if I could trade all of this magic, these wings, everything, just to get those years back I would,"
She smiled slightly.
"You missed me?"
He smiled at her.
"Course I did, Ems. I wasn't annoyed for five years, I've missed that,"
She playfully punched his arm.
"I had to go against Miss. Ginger solo,"
"And clearly not very well,"

She laughed.
"I managed to survive six years before I knew you, Mr. Stone,"
He was deadly serious now.
"And those six years scare me more than anything in this world,"
"I'll never understand why you care about me so much. No-one else does, why bother?"
"Because I love you, idiot," he shoved her playfully.
She smiled.
"Me too, Virgan,"

They both laughed and stared at eachother with total adoration. Platonic, of course. Virgil hated Miss. Ginger with a passion for the way she treated Emma, and thought forbidding her from working may improve her physical and mental health.

Emma would always fight off the bullies and return snarky remarks to anyone who would try and be mean to Virgil.

They would both do anything for eachother, they were as close as brother and sister.

Growing up poor or on the streets lured these two into a strong friendship that will last a lifetime, and no amount of magic or wings will ever change that.

---------------------------------------------------------

"He's doing well, don't you think?"
"Better than I thought he would," the silver-eyed figure who met with Roman cupped his hands over his mouth,
"You can do it, hon!"
The other rolled their eyes,
"Can you keep your gay at a minimum?"
"No-can-do, red. See, Stone here is killing it, so I shout out some support," he caught sight of the third figure,
"You're doing amazing, sweetie!"

The second sighed.

---------------------------------------------------------

Roman had his hand out of the window with a bird perched on it. It was a light cyan with a little face that reminded him so much of Patton.

The cold air felt nice on his arm since he had not been outside in a while, no more than a week, he'd say. He heard the sound of paper hitting his desk and turned around instantly. A huge grin formed on his face.
"Logan,"
His neat handwriting wasn't hard to miss - not to Roman, anyways. It read:

Dear Roman,

The magical world is quite similar to yours, except for the constant use of magic and the creatures. I do not know the dragonwitch personally but I've heard she's quite annoying. And finally no, most of us died in the war - it was awful. And we like our secret hidden so we do not have children with others.

Best wishes,            (and yes I am very
                                  proud of you. A+ :) )
Logan.

He smiled at his letter. It was so different. So amazing.

Instead of Roman. It was Dear Roman.
Instead of Best wishes, Logan Stewards. It was Best wishes, Logan.
He gave him a smiley face - he's never saw him write that. He gave him an A+, a grade he hardly ever got.

This made his day. He could just hug Logan...

"But he's not here," he whispered.
No, he thought, that will not ruin my good mood.

The cyan bird fluttered in the window and perched on Roman's desk. Roman smiled at him.
"Hey little guy,"
The bird tweeted in response.
"How are you on this splendid morning?"
The bird tweeted again.
"Good good,"
The bird tweeted once more.
"I'm fine, thank you,"

He watched the bird hop around on his stationary. It stared at the letters.
"Those are from Logan. He's the one who used to live here. I'll be honest, I love him. But I can't have him. I really miss him. Well hey, you understand, right? You're a guy,"
The little bird tweeted sympathetically.
"No. You're a bird. I'm talking to a bird. What do you know about love?"
The little bird tweeted and flew over to the window.

Roman followed him, extremely confused and intrigued. He looked down to the ledge the bird was perched on.

He saw a little nest carefully crafted with twigs and leaves. Inside of the nest sat three little eggs and another green bird nestled into them.
"Your family," it wasn't a question. It was a statement.
The little blue bird tweeted. The green bird looked up to him, frightened for her eggs. The blue bird reassured her that Roman was no threat.

Roman watched them silently. The blue bird watched over the eggs while the green flew over to Roman.
"How long until they hatch?"
She tweeted: her voice a beautiful melody.
Roman smiled excitedly.
"That's so soon!"
He looked to the blue bird.
"Guess you know more about love than I do, huh?"
The bird tweeted and Roman smiled.
