Chapter 11

"George, Hallie," I heard my father say to the man and woman, "this is my daughter Rebecca…and sweetie, this is the Adams family."

I bit back a snort when my dad said 'The Adams family'. Instead, I smiled at Jake's parents, saying, "Nice to meet you." From the corner of my eye, I saw Jake rolling his eyes. He must've noticed that I was about to laugh at his surname. Well, what else could I do? When someone said 'The Adams family', it immediately conjured up a picture of that popular cartoon series that I loved to watch as a kid.

"You too dear," said Mrs Adams, smiling back at me warmly. "Your father has told us lots about you."

"All good things I hope, Dad," I said, narrowing my eyes at my father.

"Of course all good things," started Jake. "Your father always makes me feel incompetent when he talks about you," he added.

My dad laughed, clapping Jake on the back. "And this jokester is Jake, my most disobedient patient," my father introduced. Okay, those two looked close.

"Hi Jake," I said, trying very hard not to burst out laughing. This was kind of ironic. Now we had to pretend we don't know each other?

"Hello, Rebbie – er – Rebecca." Jake started coughing violently to cover his slip-up.

Thankfully, the adults didn't notice. They had just started towards the living room. Dad looked back, narrowing his eyes at Jake. I got a bit alarmed. Did he notice Jake's slip-up? Oh no, what am I going to -

"You've been skipping your medicine again, haven't you?" he asked grimly. I breathed a sigh of relief.

Jake shook his head furiously. "No, sir," he replied. "Not after the last time you scolded me," he added under his breath. I smirked. Jake was deathly afraid of getting reprimanded by my dad.

We gathered at the living room, where my sister had finally turned off the TV and was looking at us all with her wide, curious brown eyes. Jake's parents sat on one sofa, with my dad on the maroon armchair while Jake and I took seats on either sides of Sasha, who giggled looking at Jake. My mother joined them momentarily and the adults started talking amongst themselves.

I looked questioningly at my sister, who was still giggling at Jake.

"What's so funny?" I asked her.

Sasha leaned towards me. "He has a funny beard," she whispered none too quietly. She had a loud, perky voice, so her whispers are like talking in normal volume. So, of course, Jake heard her and chuckled.

"I do not have a funny beard," he said in mock indignation. "You have funny pigtails," he said, tugging at Sasha's black hair playfully.

"Big Sis, I don't have piggy tails, do I?" Sasha asked turning towards me and fingering her hair worriedly. "I'm not a pig…am I?"

Jake and I laughed at my sister's question. She only looked more confused.

"No, you're a monkey, not a piggie," I teased.

She harrumphed and crossed her arms. "Meanie."

Jake pinched Sasha's cheek lightly. "No, she's not a monkey, nor a pig. She's the cutest little girl I've ever met."

Sasha grinned. "You're my new big brother from today!"

"And what about your big sis?" Jake asked.

"What big sis? I don't have a big sis," she replied, sticking her small, pink tongue out at me.

"Oh, jeez, you've broken my heart," I said, rolling my eyes.
