Chapter 26

The rest of the class was absolute torture.

I couldn't concentrate on anything going on. I just watched his lips move, but not really hearing what he was saying and his eyes sweep over the classroom, not once landing on me. Thousands of questions pounded in my head. Did he ever think about me? Has he met someone? Will he disappear again?

For God's sake, does he even remember me? He's acting like I'm just another student. As if he'd never known a Rebecca Smith, and had never talked to her or kissed her or declared his love for her.

What did this mean now? Will we pick up where we left off? Can we even do that? Two freaking years. I'm sure we've both changed.

Besides, he might have a fiancé for all I know- some Japanese geisha, obediently waiting for him in Japan, wearing her fancy, silk kimono and preparing his favourite type of sushi in a small, dainty kitchen…

Are there different types of sushis by the way? I've tried it only once and it was very weird…

Bleh. I go off-track under pressure. Damnit. Look what you're doing to me you – you – annoying, infuriating, maddeningly attractive…loser! Grr…

"Are you alright?" asked the blonde-haired dude on my right. He was looking at me with a scared expression.

Oops. I must've growled aloud. My cheeks burned in embarrassment.

"Ye – yeah," I stammered. "I was just clearing my throat. Heh."

He smiled weakly and turned towards his computer, typing something. I looked around the classroom. Everyone else were either typing or scrolling with their mice…er…mouses…um…oh what the heck, you know what I mean.

Oh frick, I had no idea what we were supposed to do. I helplessly turned towards the monitor and rested my hand on the mouse. What do I do?

"Problem, Rebecca?" asked a voice that sent a chill down my spine. I felt his hand behind my chair, his fingers almost brushing against my shoulder. Did he have any idea what he was doing to me?

"Um…uh…" What the hell was I going to tell him? Yeah, I have a problem cuz I didn't listen to a frigging thing you said because I was too busy wondering if your lips were still as soft as I remembered?

He leaned forwards, his hand was now on my shoulder. "This will be your permanent computer from now on. You can start making your folders, personalise it any way you like, set passwords, whatever you want," he said softly. I refused to remove my eyes from my monitor. Oh look, the wallpaper on the desktop has such a pretty flower. Hmm, I think I'll sketch that today…

"And then tomorrow, if Professor Montgomery's back, we'll work on the designing software…"

I think his hand is burning me - NO, focus on the pretty flower. Wow, it's so red, like blood, like love, like – oh look, he dropped a little piece of paper on my lap – hmm, where was I? Oh, yes, pretty red flower – WAIT a minute. There's a frigging note in my lap.

I quickly crumpled it in my fist, hastily looking around me. Jake was far off on the other side of the room, strolling away at an easy pace. The other students were all busy in their work and they either didn't notice what had happened, or I had completely imagined everything.

The paper poked my palm. Nope, it's still there. I'm certainly not imagining things.

Beside the Gym. After class, it said.

I resisted the urge to whoop out loud. He didn't forget me!
