"Kizzy?"
A soft voice spoke suddenly, causing me to jump in my chair. I gripped the letter in my shaking hands.
"Oh, sorry. I didn't mean to scare you."
Gen.
I pretended I had to stretch my arms to look like I had something to do. I'm a weirdo, I'm fully aware.
"Uh... hey, Gen?" I looked back at Peter lying there on the hospital bed, then back at the letters on top of his blankets.
"I figured I'd come and just, uh... see how he's doing." She smiled shyly and walked slowly to the other side of Peter.
She had glanced down at the letters as I secretly hoped she'd leave.
"So, how are you?" Her brownish blonde hair covered her face in loose waves and her blue eyes pierced into mine.
Why does she care how I've been?
Before I even opened my mouth to respond, she made a noise that sounded like a gasp and a hiccup. "I'm such a screw up." She croaked, raising her hands in a surrendering way. "Don't worry. I know you two are a thing now, and I'd never, ever try to come in between that again."
I must've been staring at her for some time because she continued slowly. "I know you may not forgive me now, and that's fine. But-"
"How long were Peter and I a thing?"
She blinked. "Uh, I think just maybe a few months. But I wouldn't know," she exhaled loudly. "I was too busy being a rude bitch to you."
Not hard to believe that.
"You did something that caused us to... break up?" I asked, my voice quivering.
Her eyes widened. "Yeah... you remember, don't you?"
I sighed, shaking my head. "I'm having trouble remembering certain details before the accident. I didn't even know Peter and I were a thing-"
"Ugh, it was a stupid set up."
"What was?"
She ran a hand through her hair, sighing. "Peter got you these flowers one day. Gorgeous flowers, all different kinds. I was super jealous, 'cause what else am I good at? He was about to walk up and give them to you at your locker. You didn't know because your back was turned, but I just took the flowers from him and made a big show."
My breathing calmed while hers seemed to quicken.
"I wrapped my arms around him like the home wrecker I am, and acted like he got those flowers for me. And I knew you'd see, and be upset. Then I kissed him, and boom, that's when you turned around. The perfect moment. Just what I wanted."
