The Noose Around My Neck
I am losing you.
You are the sand I carry
in these pockets full of lint,
where my hands delve deeply
to hide their shaking.
Hollow fingers grasp desperately,
and hold you for just a breath.
You fall through the cracks
that mimic the breaking pavement,
and the wind carries you away.
You’ve left Winter in your wake,
and I cannot feel the sunlight
that seems to reach these shores.
I’m losing you,
but maybe you were already gone.
There are plenty of fish in the sea,
but I found a pearl in the mouth
of a clam, and the tragedy of pain
had born the luminescent jewel.
I wear it around my neck, now.
It is too heavy - the very anchor
keeping me tethered on shores
that haunt the lungs I breathe.
I am losing you, I am losing you,
and this pearl is a noose around my neck.
I think you were already gone.
