I Don't Belong

Sherlock and I had been talked into going to this party on campus. Neither of us were thrilled. The other students didn't like us and we weren't the party type. I was ready to kill John and Mary. The music was loud and annoying, lights were flashing, people were dancing.

Sherlock had stepped out for some air. The only reason he came was because I agreed to be his date, the same reason I had agreed. The problem was though, this other guy kept hitting on me. I would have found him attractive but, he was horrible to Sherlock.

I decided to go check on Sherlock, I was worried about him. Most of the students here were really horrible to him. I found him leaning on the railing of a bridge in the gardens. He was smoking; tonight was worse than I thought. "Hey babe," I said standing beside him.

"Hey," he replied. I could hear the hurt in his voice. I took his free hand in mine. He didn't pull away but he examined our hands. "Why do you hang out with me?"

"I like you, Sherlock. You're a lot of fun," I replied.

"What about that guy that keeps asking you out? He's more your type than I am."

"If he were my type Sherlock he would be nice to you. He's a dick. I'd skin him alive before going on a date with him. You're my type."

"Aren't you worried about what everyone else will think?"

"Fuck everyone else, Sherlock. The only person's opinion I care about is yours." He just nodded. "Hey," I said leaning into him. He looked at me, "You're my best friend. I care about you more than you can know." Part of John insisting that I go to this party was because I had been attacked last month and now wouldn't let anyone but Sherlock get close. I barely left my flat. The only person I trusted was Sherlock. I looked up at the stars as he thought.

He was intertwining his fingers with mine, then unlocking them. I let him play with my hand as I watched the sky. It was uncommonly clear tonight. "I don't belong anywhere, do I?" he asked breaking the silence.

I turned to look at him, "Oh, sweetie," I said holding my arms open to him. "Come here." He stepped into my arms and I wrapped mine around him tightly. "You belong right here," I said rubbing his back. I stretched up onto my toes to be able to stroke his hair. It took him a few minutes but he hugged back. "No matter what anyone else tells you, Sherlock, you do belong, you aren't a freak. You do have friends that care about you and love you. I'm one of them; there's nothing I wouldn't do for you."

"Thank you Dev," he said tucking his face into my neck as he sat upon the railing.

"You're welcome sweetie," I replied keeping my arms around him as I felt a few tears hit my shoulder. "It's okay sweetie."

"You giving the damaged goods a hickey there freak!" the guy who had been hitting on me all night called.

"Ignore him, Sherlock," I whispered in his ear.

"Not going to answer me?"

I pecked Sherlock on the lips, "I'll be right back. I'm going to go knock some teeth loose," I said sliding off the railing. I walked up to this frat boy who was just as tall as Sherlock.

"Oh do I finally get your attention shortie?" I stalked up to him slowly, I wanted him to think he had me, then I was going to pound the shit out of him.

"Yeah, you have my attention asshole."

"Oh, not nice."

"You know what's not nice? Treating others like they don't matter. If you ever mistreat any of my friends again I'll do far worse than I'm about to do."

"Oh, and what is that?"

"This," I said delivering several blows to his face. "Stay away from Sherlock and me unless you want me to remove the reason you're called a male!" I shouted as I delivered the final blow. He was a bloodied mess.

I walked back over to Sherlock and hopped back up onto the railing. "Where were we?" I asked.

"You are incredible," he said pulling my face to his and kissing me.

"Tell me something I don't know," I said against his lips smiling. He laughed but continued to kiss me.
