Does height even matter?

I have no idea how this conversation had even started in the bar or how we even got to it, but my friend definitely wants her opinion heard on the subject. An opinion which I do not agree with at all. Luckily we chose to sit in a booth, so at least we have a little bit of privacy so no one else can overhear our conversation.

"So, you're saying that a tall girl and a short guy shouldn't date? Like, at all?" I ask, trying to understand what Nikita is implying. "What exactly do you mean by that?" Nikita sighs.

"I thought it was pretty obvious. I mean, seeing a tall girl tower over a guy, it's not normal. That kind of thing just doesn't look right." I lean back, studying my friend.

"So, you're saying that I, a tall woman, should not date guy who is shorter than me because it just doesn't look right." I reiterate to try and get her to see how ridiculous her statement is. But instead, she just nods like I am finally getting it. "Well that doesn't seem right." I say, making her groan and lean back against the seat.

"I'm sorry that took so long." Joe says, placing down our drinks in front of us, before sliding back into the booth beside me. "It's very busy up there tonight." He says, taking a long sip of his beer. "What are we talking about here?"

"Nikita here doesn't think a tall girl should date a guy who is shorter than her. I disagree." I side eye Nikita, and Joe leans in as if he is fairly interested in the topic.

"Of course you disagree, Y/N. You can barely find someone taller who is interested enough to date you, so of course you would settle with someone who is shorter than you." Ouch. I flinch back as if I had been hit. Looks like Nikita is starting to grow defensive, but that attack still hurts.

"That wasn't necissary, Nikita." Joe says in a low voice, coming to my defense, even though she subtly attacked him too.

"Whatever." She waves his words away before setting her sights on him. "What's your thoughts about the topic then, Joe?"

"I don't think height should matter at all when it comes to your significant other. It's a lot like age, it shouldn't matter as long as you love them for them." He says matter-of-factly, and I agree with him 100 percent. "Sure, everyone has their own preferences, but I don't think it should be a deciding factor on whether or not you should date someone." Wow, his answer was actually really mature. He didn't turn it into a joke. I smile at him for his answer and even under these dull lights, I can see his face go slightly red. He turns to look at me, smiling back.

"But height does matter." Nikita says, ruining the moment and making me look back at her. "When a guy is taller than a girl, that means protection and cute cuddly positions. And again, it just doesn't look right. The man is always supposed to be taller than the girl."

"Who says a shorter guy can't protect his girl? Who says a girl even needs protecting? And who the fuck says you can't have cute cuddly positions with a shorter guy?" I want to scream, but instead I keep it as a sharp mutter so that only Joe hears.

"So, you're saying," Joe begins, "if Y/N and I were to start dating it would be wrong because our heights just don't look right together?" I can feel my cheeks heat up at his hypothetical scenario of us dating.

"Yes, that's exactly it. You two dating would just not look right at all!" Nikita says and I can't help but be offended by it. Anyone would be lucky to date Joe, tall or not. Especially me.

"Okay, I guess that's all sorted out then." Joe says finally, standing up. "Are you ready to go, Y/N?" he asks, looking down at me with a smile.

"Yeah, but where are we going?" I ask, slightly confused but I slide out of the booth to stand up with him.

"To go on a date, if you would like?" He holds out a hand, which I immediately take with a bright smile.

"I don't see any reason not to." He smiles brightly back at me, and we're about to take a step and leave, but Nikita speaks up. Right, she's still here.

"Really? You two are going on a date? But Y/N, you're taller than him. It doesn't look right." She almost looks disgusted looking up at us.

"Well, I guess your just going to have to get used to it." I say. "Or better yet, get over it. After all there is more to a person than just their height. Now, if you'll excuse us we're going to be in lots of cute cuddly positions throughout the night."

"Couldn't have said it better myself." Joe comments before tugging on my hand and guiding me out into the fresh, cold air.  But then we head towards the familiar route of my house. I guess we're not going on a date after all. Of course it was just to annoy Nikita. Why did I get my hopes up?

"I can't believe Nikita prioritizes height so much. It shouldn't matter. It doesn't matter. Not to me anyway."

"Or me." Joe says, squeezing my hand. "It's good to hear that it doesn't matter to you, either." He starts swinging our hands to and fro, making me laugh until I realize we missed the turn off to my house.

"Wait, where are we going? We just walked right past my street."

"I know. I'm taking you on that date." He starts looking confused.

"Wait, you were serious? It wasn't just to piss Nikita off?" I ask and we stop in the middle of the footpath. Joe looks at me nervously.

"Um, yeah. I mean, no it wasn't just to piss Nikita off, but yeah, I am serious. Are you still up for going on a date with a shorty like me?" There we go, there's the joking side to Joe. Even in serious situations. I sigh out in relief, a smile coming back to my face.

"Only if your still up for dating a tall girl like me." He laughs, showing off his amazing smile.

"Of course."
