It was a cold February afternoon when Bucky came home from school with Maisie by his side. "Hey mom..what's for dinner?" Bucky said
"Oh I just ordered you all some pizza. I have to get to the hospital. Call your grandpa if you need something." Winnie said
"Where's dad?" Bucky said
"Um he um..well. James honey.." she said
"Mom where has dad been the last two days? Did he leave us? Is there another woman?" Bucky said
"No it's none of that. Look I have to get to the hospital." Winnie said as she bolted.
Winnie felt horrible all the way to work. James and her lied to Bucky about James retiring and his brother and brother in law going to college. The therapist told them to lie about them being captured.
James had been promoted Colonel at Fort Benning. Everyday James drives to Fort Benning from Savannah. He does his best to make it home before Bucky does.
Bucky paid for the pizza but he was quiet. "Buck.." she said
"Maisie I think its best if you go home." He said
"Bucky..we always do movie night on Thursdays." She said
"Maisie please just go home." He said
She went downstairs to gather up her homework as she wiped tears. He came down stairs "oh this crap again. Grow up Maisie I just want to be alone is that to much to fucking ask." He yelled at her.
"I hate you James..you acting just like you use to act." She yelled at him
"Don't you yell at me!" He said as he pulled her back to him.
"Let me go..I will get an uber" she said as she pushed him away.
"Don't you push me Maisie" he said
She punched him in the nose so he punched her back in the eye. She ran out of the basement and got an uber. Lydia was home when she came in the door.
"Baby..what happened?" She said when she seen tears and her eye.
Lydia took her to the ER to get it checked out. She told her mom and Winnie what happened. Winnie looked down "Im sorry Maisie.."
The next day Bucky followed her to her locker. "Maisie.." he said
She didn't say anything she got her books then walked away. She hid in the library the rest of the day. That night at the basketball game he didnt see her.
He asked the girls where she was after the game. "She quit before the game. What happened Buck?" Natasha said
"I snapped last night. I think my parents are lying to me about being done with the military. My dad hasn't been home three days. I made her go home she was crying." He said
Natasha shook her head as she walked away. Bucky looked down then his grandpa took him home. The next day Winnie sat Bucky down.
"Okay..your dad wasn't for this. But the fact that you punched Maisie tells me that we need to be honest." Winnie said
"Mom?" He said
"Your daddy is at Fort Benning currently. He is the Colonel there he was promoted which is why we are here in Georgia. He goes after he drops you off at school and makes it back before you get home." Winnie said
Bucky looked down.
"Thats why your daddy hasn't been home. He is working right now with the Pentagon and Secretary of Defense." She said
"You lied to me." He said as he wiped tears.
"Honey your daddy has a office he isnt going on deployments anymore. And you are about to be 16 son you cant lash out like you do." Winnie said
"Shutup! Just shut up!!" He yelled as he ran out of the room.
He locked himself in his room the rest of the day. Maisie was at home when Winnie came over and explained why Bucky was mad. She left out the part about his brother and brother in law.
She looked down and said "Atleast he has his dad here." Winnie already knew what she meant by that. Lydia had informed her of her husband's MIA status.
