“What time is it?”

“Five, Five eight.”

“Ugh, seriously? What about now?”

“Still five, five eight.”

“Michael she’ll be here.” Mom laughed.

Frowning, I adjusted Maggie on my lap since she was putting my left leg to sleep.

“Do you remember what I told you?” I asked her.

“To not talk about her face.” She answered back robotically.

“Michael stop worrying.” Mom laughed, “It’s obvious that she likes you.”

“Yeah but what if I blow it?”

“You won’t.”

“What if I do?”

“Well then, I suppose you’d have to win her back.”

“What if I blow it so bad, all hopes of winning her back are obliterated.”

“We’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.”

Chewing my lower lip, I waited, for what felt like an eternity before tentatively speaking up again.

“What time is it now?”

“Six, zero four.” Maggie answered.

“She’s late.” I sighed.

“Maybe she’s not coming.” Maggie said, “Or maybe she got lost, or died.”

“Maggie!” Mom gasped.

“What?” she questioned, innocently.

“Don’t say things like that.” Mom chided.

Suddenly, the doorbell rang.

“That’s her!” I cried, rising to my feet, and setting Maggie down on the floor, “How do I look?”

“Lovely as always.” Mom replied, smoothing down my hair.

Brushing her hands away, I took a deep breath, before hastily making my way to the door and after a moment of hesitation, threw it open.

My heart hammering wildly, I leaned against the doorframe.

“Hello Spencer.”

“Who’s Spencer?” an unfamiliar female voice questioned.

“Oh.” I mumbled, straightening up and scratching the back of my neck, my cheeks warm with embarrassment, “I’m sorry, I thought you were someone else and….”

“I’m kidding.” Spencer’s familiar voice laughed, “I got you.”

“It’s not very hard I’m blind!” I snapped.

“Sorry.” She giggled.

Suddenly I was startled by a car horn a few feet away.

“Have fun Spence!” A boy’s voice called out, “But not too much fun if you know what I’m saying!”

Frowning slightly in confusion, I shoved my hands into my pockets.

“That’s my stupid brother and his bone head friend.” She informed me, “Can we… can we go inside?”

"Sure," I said quickly, "Of course."

Opening the door wider I felt and heard her walk past me before closing the door behind her.

"Can I talke your jacket?" I questioned.

"I'm not wearing one." she answered.

"Right, of course." I said quickly, "Um, are you like, hungry?"
