CANS POV

SANEM. Her name is Sanem.

"Thank you, Can."
She suddenly looks down, shyly, and touches her back.
"For this and for helping me remember."

A few seconds ago she was elated but now, her joy at remembering her name has also triggered some not so good memories.

"I guess this means I should go home now."

I too feel totally deflated at her words.

No, don't go, is what I'm shouting in my head.
She looks up as though she's heard me.

I draw my fingers down my face and through my beard. I think they call it self soothing. I pinch the end and go back to do it again.
My hand snakes around my neck and my eyes rest on the two soup mugs on the fireplace.

"It's too late tonight. It's dark and the wolves are out. I can take you out of the woods tomorrow, if you like."

"I've remembered where I left my bag. In the big, empty house. My clothes and my phone!"

Her face shows panic now. Her hands on her cheeks.

"Oh No, My parents are going to be frantic. All the missed calls. They are going to be so worried."

She doesn't mention a man. Her groom, fiance, boyfriend, anything like that!

"Right, I'll go and get your bag. But you must stay here. Promise me."

"Why is it safe for you to go out in the woods, alone. but not for me to go with you?"

This is a reasonable question.
I can't answer it, unless I tell her I'm the next Alpha of this particular pack of wolves roaming the woods.

"I know my way out, without having to use a torch. I'll be faster and less easy to track."

Her scent is too strong for her not to alert every wolf around.
I wouldn't trust Polens mood tonight.

"Okay. That would be good. Thank you."
She touches my arm and the hairs on my skin stand to attention.
Other parts of me too, but I shift and concentrate on how I'm going to manage to leave her alone.

"Okay, sooner I go, sooner I get back."

I stand up and go to grab a jacket. She follows, her hands twisting together.

"Are you sure you'll be okay? They sounded so close before. What will you do if they see you? What do I do if they come near the cabin. Do you have a gun or something?"

"WHAT? No. You can't shoot them! They aren't going to attack you. This is their home. Their woods. They have a right to roam free. They are inquisitive and intelligent. They live in a protective family unit."

I see her eyes get watery.
"Hey, don't get upset. I didn't mean to sound cross."

She wipes a tear away with the back of her hand and turns her head but I see another tear drop out.
