Maddie paced back and forth the police station, chewing her thumbnail nervously. I knew she was on edge, so was I.
"Officer Cooper. Can we at least go back to our apartments to get some clothes?" Maddie said as she finally sat next to me.
He sighed, "It's too dangerous for you girls to go back there. What if he's in one of your apartments?"
"Then come with us!" Maddie whined. "Please, it'll only take a few minutes."
Officer Cooper crossed his arms and let out a long sigh. "Alright fine. But you have 5 minutes to get in and get out. Got it?"
Maddie jumped up, smiling in triumph. "Thank you so much! We'll be quick, I promise."
He beckoned us to follow him to his patrol car, there was another officer already inside. On the way there he made it perfectly clear why he couldn't allow us to go back there to stay. There are too many exits to the building, which would require too much man power to cover. That was the only reason he agreed to let us go pick up our clothes.
"My partner will go upstairs with you Maddie. I'll come with you Alex." He stated, making it clear it wasn't an option. "By the way this is my partner, Officer Campbell." He said gesturing to the man sitting next to him. He nodded at us.
The ride back to our apartment building felt like an eternity. Officer Cooper took a bunch of side roads to avoid the main street. He assured us it was for our safety, to make sure we weren't followed. I was too tired to care anymore. I just wanted to get my clothes and go to sleep.
We parked at the side of the building to avoid being seen. The two officers spoke to each other briefly before splitting up to join us. Maddie and officer Campbell went to the first floor, and Officer Cooper and I headed to the third floor. Thankfully there weren't many people around at this time of night. When we got to my door, I unlocked it. Officer Cooper stopped me from going inside.
"I'll go in first, incase he's in there." He said quietly. I nodded.
We walked in and closed the door softly. I turned the lights on and was relieved to find my apartment looked untouched. Officer Cooper proceeded to search my apartment for any intruders. I waited by the front door, tapping my foot nervously.
"It's all clear, I'll wait outside for you." Officer Cooper said stepping outside.
I sighed and made my way to my bedroom. I grabbed my suitcase and started throwing clothes inside. I had no idea how long we were going for, or where we were going for that matter. I crossed the hall to the bathroom and grabbed some toiletries. I stood in the hallway thinking over what else I needed. I jogged out to the living room and grabbed my fluffy blanket from the couch. I always felt safe and cozy when I was wrapped up in it. I wanted to take it more as a comfort then anything else. I folded my blanket and placed it in my suitcase on-top of my clothes. I had to sit on it to zip it closed, because of course I over packed it. I sighed and blew a piece of hair out of my face. The last thing I grabbed was my phone charger. I reached behind my bed to unplug it and began coiling it around my hand.
I heard a loud crash come from outside my apartment. I threw my bag over my shoulder and ran to the door, it was left open. I looked out in the hallway, there was no one there. Maybe Officer Cooper went downstairs to Maddie's apartment. I tried my best to convince myself that was the case, but something felt off. He was so adamant about not leaving us alone.
I shook the thought from my mind and made my way to the staircase. There had to be a logical reason for why Officer Cooper disappeared. Maybe his partner called him. I stopped dead in my tracks when I arrived at Maddie's apartment. The door was open, and Officer Campbell wasn't outside.
