Sophie Elizabeth Foster is Unmatchable. The words were still ringing in her ears hours later. She stared down at her rumpled teal gown. It was the same color as the eyes she dreaded looking into. Dreaded seeing the disappointment in when he heard the news.
The past hours had all been in a daze for Sophie. She remembered being escorted out of the Matchmaker's building and the looks of shock and concern on her adoptive parents faces when they'd been given the bad news. They had rushed Sophie back to Havenfield after that, hugging her and telling her everything would be okay. She could tell they were trying to convince themselves just as much. Grady and Edaline had left her alone in her room as they hailed Mr. Forkle. Sophie spent the time staring at her ceiling and wondering why she couldn't be normal.
A soft knock on Sophie's door sent her bolting upright.
"Sophie," a gentle voice called through the wood. "Can I come in?"
"Yes," Sophie croaked, her voice hoarse from sobbing. At her response, a slender figure entered the room. Edaline.
