It was the most beautiful thing you had ever seen. A huge gleaming palace with towers jutting upwards was surrounded by the most amazing courtyard covered in green grass and hundreds of rare flowers including roses so red it'd make the queen of hearts jealous. The inside was just as beautiful too. When you first walked up the shining staircase that looked like it came right out of the Cinderella movie, you were greeted by the footmen who complemented your fancy attire and ask for your name. You'd bow or courtesy as he announced your arrival to the party goers in the ballroom. Of course you make your way down more stairs and to the long white clothed tables covered in bite-sized pies, cookies, cakes, cheese, punch, mead, and the finest treats and goodies around for the esteemed guests and royals. You would look out the window and pretend not to notice the gorgeous heir approach and ask for a dance to which you would smile and nod, having finished your tart while watching the silent people outside. Of course, the two of you would have a lovely time and both were complemented on your wonderful dancing. The golden ball room would almost dim and everyone would step back to see the unknown newcomer dance with the eldest royal. After so long you would tire of dancing and watching the original paintings on the ceiling watch you so you would take your new dance partner to wonder the palace. Now you two would get a chance to talk and you will make fast friends. Each of you found the other so easy to talk to that you would start talking about anything and everything. You would go to the courtyard and your new friend would tell you about all the beautiful flowers that grew there and you would smile and share your own stories. The young royal picked a newly bloomed rose and handed it to you. You would smile of course and tuck it somewhere safe. Before you knew it, the lavishly dressed party goers would trickle out of the palace and the wondrous dream would come to an end. The two of you would reluctantly say your goodbyes.

And now you are here. You watch as the bent and scuffed crown at your feet is sniffed at by a fearless rat as the corroded, overgrown ruins of the once grand palace lay crumbled before you. Your dream has become quite the horrid nightmare.
