TW: Black brutality.

James

The smoke leaked from my mouth as I exhaled the drug, a sense of relaxation coming over my body as I gazed at the rest of my friends. We sat in a circle in the alley way, their eyes blood shot as they spoke to one another. Billy motioned for me to pass the blunt to him with a shaky hand, mumbled words coming out from his throat that didn't completely make sense to me.

"puff puff pass. You know? Keep it moving."

I passed him the blunt without any words, resting my head against the cold concrete wall as I gazed at the four of them. Billy and Avery sat next to each other rolling new blunts with red eyes, my cousins Felix and Asher sitting on either side of me. Their brother Malachi didn't want to show up to partake in 'harmful' acts... whatever that means. He went on to say that weed at such a young age is bad for the development for the brain.

I've been smoking for years. I'm just fine.

"If your dad finds out, he's not gonna let you outside for months like that last time." Avery said to me suddenly, his dark brown eyes meeting mine. I couldn't help but scoff in disgust at the mention of my dad, forcing my eyes away from him.

"Don't talk about him. I'm so sick of him lately. I'm 17 years old! I don't understand why he's so strict about everything I do!"

"Which dad you talkin' about?" Billy suddenly asked me. I couldn't help but laugh at his question, watching as he inhaled the smoke deeply from the blunt.

"My dad Gabriel. He's so strict with every little thing I do. He won't even let me close the door when Harper is over the house! He even makes Julia sit in there with us sometimes with her annoying ass!"

"Our dad is the same way. If he found out we were here right now he would kill us!" Felix exclaimed.

"Uncle Luke isn't that bad though. I wonder where dad gets it from..." Asher said to his brother. Felix shrugged his shoulders, looking at my confused expression on my face.

"He took a fuckin' fit when I came home with a nose piercing! At least my dad lets me look the way I want to!" I told Felix. Avery passed me a blunt after the words left my mouth. I brought the blunt up to my lips as I gazed over at my cousins, inhaling the smoke deeply.

"When you're eighteen that's when you dip! I don't have my mom and I'm just doing just fine! my dad is always out with his bitches and drinkin' but I'm doin' just fine keeping the apartment alright!" He said, bringing the blunt to his lips. "You don't owe your family anything!"

He suddenly took out a shaky breath, tears welling up in his eyes as he exhaled the smoke.

"We are really fucked up right now, got myself cryin' and shit..."

Asher suddenly let out a sound of disappointment as he handed his phone to Felix, rolling his eyes as he read the message on his phone. They pulled themselves off of the concrete ground with a sigh, holding a hand down to me.

"My dad said we need to go home now. He said Uncle Gabriel told him to take you in for the night, so we need to bring you along."

I looked over to Billy and Avery, their eyes widened as they waited for my response. I felt a lump in my throat as I got angrier and angrier at my dad. Why should I listen to him all the time when he's made worse mistakes in the past?
