Chapter 14

Present time...

Ngayon ang unang araw ng paglilitis sa kaso ko. Nandito si Mommy at Tito Alfred upang suportahan ako. 

Dumating na rin ang pamilya ni Senator Ramulo. Nanlilisik ang ibinibigay na tingin sa akin ni Mrs. Ramulo.

Nasa tabi ko si Rush. Hindi ako makatingin sa kaniya. 

Hindi ko maalala kung ano ang nangyari noong gabi na iyon dahil sa sobrang kalasingan. Nagising na lamang ako sa loob ng aking kuwarto.

Kinakabahan ako sa magiging takbo ng kaso ko. 

Ang sabi ni Tito Alfred ay maaaring ito ang una at huling court trial sa kaso ko kung mapapatunayan ni Rush ang pagiging inosente ko ngayong araw.

Natigilan ako nang maramdaman ang kamay ni Rush. Kinuha niya ang ang aking kamay at hinawakan ito ng mahigpit. 

Nahalata niya ang panlalamig nito kaya mas idiniin niya ang kaniyang pagkakahawak.

"I'll protect you, Xophia. I promise," mahina niyang sabi sa akin. 

Hindi na ako nakasagot dahil dumating ang Judge para sa trial na ito.

"All rise. The Regional Trial Court Branch 24 is now in session. The honorable Judge Ferdinand Osigan presiding." Tumayo kaming lahat sa sinabi ng isang court staff.

"Please be seated. Please, call the case." Seryoso ang boses ng Judge. 

He must be 60 or something. Matikas pa rin ang kaniyang tindig at mahahalata na ang ilang puting buhok sa kaniyang ulo. Umupo kami.

"Calling the case of People of the Philippines versus Doctor Xophia Claresse Del Varga, now comes for hearing," muling pahayag ng court staff.

"Counsels make your appearance." 

Sa sinabi ng Judge ay tumayo si Rush pati na rin ang abogado ng kabilang panig.

"Your honor, my name is Prosecutor Walter Ledesma and I am representing the People of the Philippines in this case." 

The prosecutor of Mrs. Ramulo looks a little bit older than Rush. I heard na isa rin siyang sikat na prosecutor. Marami na rin siyang na-ipanalong kaso.

"Your honor, my name is Atty. Rushvel Matthew Laurent and I am representing the Accused in this case." 

Kahit na kinakabahan, hindi ko pa rin naiwasan na humanga kay Rush. He's oozing with confidence.

"Is the prosecution ready?" tanong ng Judge sa kabilang panig.

Tumayo naman ang Prosecutor ng kabilang panig. "Yes, Your Honor."

Tumingin sa amin ang Judge. "Is the defense ready?"

Tumayo si Rush at agad sumagot, "Yes, Your Honor."

"Will the clerk please swear in the jury?" Tumayo ang clerk na sinabi ng Judge at nagsalita.

"Will the jury please stand and raise your right hand?" Itinaas ni Rush at ng Prosecutor ang kanilang kamay. 

"Do each of you swear that you will fairly try the case before this court, and that you will return a true verdict according to the evidence and the instructions of the court, so help you, God? Please say 'I do'."

Sabay na nag-'I do' sila Rush habang nakataas pa rin ang kanilang kamay. 

"You may be seated."

Nanatiling nakatayo ang Prosecutor ng kabilang panig and talked to the jury.

"Your Honor, and ladies and gentlemen of the jury: the defendant has been charged with the crime of medical malpractice. The evidence will show that the defendant was assigned to be the doctor of the late Senator. The defendant suggested a Thrombolytic medication in which it became the cause of death of Senator Ramulo. The evidence that I'll present will prove to you that the defendant is guilty as charged."
