McGonogall put up portraits of all those who had died in the First Wizarding War; including Lily and James Potter. Harry was always welcome to come to Hogwarts anytime to speak to them- and he did. The first time he saw his parents, he started crying and they did too.
When he told them about the Dursleys, they both started shouting profanities until Harry told them about his "Christmas Card relationship" with them. When he told them about everything he face at Hogwarts (e.g fighting Quirrel, the Basilisk, Triwizard Tournament, etc.) they started crying again.
Every year at the Battle of Hogwarts memorial, he always went to talk to them and established the relationship they could never build in real life.
