Jeno turned down another hall

Jeno turned down another hall.

Where is he?

He had left no more than a few seconds after Renjun had walked out the door of the cafeteria, yet when he walked out, Renjun was already nowhere to be seen.

He hurried up the staircase. Renjun had to be somewhere.

The art room maybe? but Jeno had already walked past the empty art room a few minutes ago. He had pretty much searched the whole school by now.

Renjun had said earlier that he was going to the roof for a cup of tea so maybe, just maybe, Jeno would be able to find him on the roof of their school. He was a fairy, after all, maybe he needed an open space where he could fly or something.

The only problem was that Jeno had no clue where the roof access door was.

He walked through the corridors of the second floor and was so busy thinking about where it could be that he didn't realize he had almost bumped into someone until they called his name.

"Jeno!"

He looked up. "Mark?"

"What were you thinking? You almost walked right into me," Mark said, slightly amused.

"Sorry, I was... distracted," Jeno replied.

"I could tell," Mark remarked.

Jeno elicited a slightly anxious chuckle. He looked around hastily before asking, "Hey, do you happen to know where I could access the roof from?"

"The roof?"

He nodded.

"Well, I'm not sure if I can tell you that—" Mark started.

"Please, it's about Renjun. I want to... confess," Jeno lied.

Mark's eyes widened.

Of course, Jeno had no intention of confessing to the boy, but he remembered his conversation with Mark the other day and the other pushing him to take his chance. A part of him felt bad for lying, but he really needed to see Renjun right now.

"Okay," Mark said hesitantly, "I guess I'll make an exception for you."

Jeno smiled in anticipation.

"You can only access the roof through the elevator," Mark told him.

His smile dropped. The elevator could only be used if the user had a key. Which meant that he wouldn't be able to access it.

Unless...

Jeno took one glance at Mark's injured foot and crutches. "You have a key don't you?"

Mark nodded. "I'll only take you there on one condition. No matter what, don't tell anyone you were there, students aren't even supposed to go up to the roof."

"I won't tell anyone."

Mark smiled. "Great! Follow me then."

—☆—

"Here's the key. If you lose it, you're dead," Mark said, tossing him the tiny silver ring.

"Thanks, hyung."

"Don't worry about it," Mark replied, "now go before I change my mind."

Jeno gave him a final smile before walking through the doors of the elevator. The bell dinged as he made it to the top floor.

He was met with a chilly breeze and the sight of Renjun holding the silvery chain in between his slender fingers.

"I thought you said you weren't evil!" Jeno called as he walked towards the boy.

Renjun looked up, surprised to see Jeno standing in front of him. His fingers seemed to clench the locket even tighter than before.

"Since when was borrowing a locket evil?" the other replied, poised, just as he always was.

Jeno almost rolled his eyes. "You must be delusional to think you're borrowing. You're stealing it!" he said, unable to keep his calm and collected manner any longer.

With one swift movement, Renjun's hand lit up with magic and he made the motion of pulling Jeno in by the collar of his shirt until their faces were mere inches apart. Under different circumstances, Jeno would've felt his heart beating out of his chest from the closeness.

This time, Jeno could only feel his heart beating out of his chest in ostensible fear.

"You are speaking to a fairy," Renjun threatened, teeth clenched. Jeno noticed the hand that wasn't magically holding his shirt was spreading blue electricity all along the fairy's arm.

It was at that moment that Jeno seemed to finally remember the detail of respect. He had read online somewhere not to disregard, ignore, or speak down to a fairy in any way. Of course, he had deemed that none of that could be real, but maybe there had been truth to that statement.

Jeno kept quiet and tried not to cower at Renjun's intense glare. It took several seconds before the latter finally decided to release him. Jeno felt a force push him backwards. The same force he had felt in the first week of Renjun's arrival.

"The locket was not yours to take," Renjun said before turning on his heel and walking away.

Jeno was left breathless and completely, utterly, confused. The locket was Renjun's? Then why hadn't he just asked for it back when Jeno showed it to him?

Eventually, he came to the conclusion that the whole nice act Renjun had pulled was just a feat to earn his trust in order to take the locket.

A part of him felt completely betrayed by all those misleading smiles and conversations. To Jeno, they had all seemed so genuine. Another part of him felt frustrated for still getting nowhere in his journey to earning Renjun's trust.

The boy took a deep breath and composed himself before walking off towards the elevator.

He made a mental note to one, never anger a fairy ever again and two, figure out how Renjun always managed to disappear so quickly.

The elevator looked untouched and all that was left in the spot that Renjun was standing was a small sprinkle of blue fairy dust.

When Jeno picked it up, it burned his hand and disappeared into thin air as if his touch was poisonous.
