(Based off of master_of_cringe's headcanon on Liu's backstory.)
Sully is a malevolent demon made by Zalgo.
When Liu died and was buried, Zalgo decided to infest Liu's body with Sully in order to kidnap Jeff and make him join Zalgo's side (after his attempts to recruit him failed the first time.)
It was successful in allowing Sully to inhabit the body, but there was only one problem. Sully wasn't the only one in the body.
Being that Liu's body was now alive, Liu was not allowed to past on. Leaving him to go back and re-inhabit his old body.
Liu would later switch sides and join Slendy's Group of Misfits™️, severing any possible ties with Zalgo and providing Liu protection.
But he was never able to get rid of Sully. Only make it so he would be more dormant and front less often.
