Freya was checking her charts, mindnumbing bored. She wasn't a fan of charting but she rather get it out of the way. Since it was her first day, she couldn't automatically start saving lives. She had to do a lot of paperwork.

In the distance German aircraft can be heard, but Freya was unbothered, war was an old friend.

Freya notices the frightened looks on most of her staff and she sighs, she doesn't know if she can trust shaking hands.

Freya needs a hardened staff, not some frail workers.

Nurse Patty walks up to Freya. "You're new. I'm Patty, I'm in your service." Patty says

Freya looks up and eyes the nurse, she looks to be calm and collected, unafraid.

Good, at least there's her.

Freya nods, handing her the chart. "Yeah, today's my first day.....What division is coming in next." Freya asks, going straight to the point.

"I see that you're not much of a talker." Patty says "Yeah we're in the middle of a war and I'm one of the two trauma surgeons here, I can't exactly take the time to make conversation. Now tell me what division is coming next." Freya asked

"Well, you're going to be a joy to work with. The 107th, they're doing their training and in a week they'll arrive here." Patty says

"Thank you. Now can you tell me why we are so understaffed?" Freya ask

"There aren't many doctors willing to sign up to work in the middle of a war. The government can't exactly draft them." Patty says

"I would assume they could." Freya says "Yeah well a doctor forced to work here isn't a good doctor." Patty says

Freya hums, licking her lips. "Please finish the rest of these while I set up. Afterward, you can introduce me to the rest of the staff." Freya says

"On it." Patty says

....

"Attention! This is our head of trauma, Doctor Freya Swan. You'll listen to her and only her, she will assign you to whatever job there is and you are not to disobey order. We are in war, we don't have time for tears." Patty announces

The nurses look nervous as they stare at the cold doctor. Most flinch as an explosion is heard from afar.

Freya eyes the shaking staff with dread.

....

Next day.

Freya was knee-deep in blood and guts. Her eyes were hard as she tried to stop the soldier's bleeding.

The soldier was shaking and moaning in pain.

Freya was in the middle of a field, luckily covered by a hill. There was so much damage.

"I need a stretcher over here!" Freya yells, her voice booming.

Patty is the first person she sees and Frey sighs in relief. The two load the fallen soldier.

"Will he make?" Patty asks

The two are running towards the tents. "He's hanging on a tread, I'll have to see what I can do but I'm only human." Freya lies

Freya hasn't used her powers for centuries. She doesn't plan to.

.....

"That was amazing, I mean you practically floated. I mean your technique is amazing. I actually think that soldier will survive." Patty says

Freya nods, giving her a half smile. When she's working to save lives, it brings an unbidden joy.

"I think so too, now send in the next. I'll clean up here." Freya says

Freya couldn't stop for even a moment, there are more dying soldiers than there are surgeons.

When Freya has time, she's going to have to teach the nurses the basics. She needs them to at least know how to stop the bleeding so she can get to them.

Patty nods firmly and she runs out.

Freya sighs. They need a system, she couldn't just rely on one nurse. Patty works well by her side.

....

It was the end of the day, Freya was covered in blood. They only lost two soldiers that day, which was a miracle.

Patty relaxes on the bench, stretching. "Who's the surgeon taking the night shift?" Freya asks, wiping her hands clean.

"That would be John, don't worry he's pretty good." Patty says

"Maybe but the nurses, they run around like they lost their heads. I mean yes they can stop the soldiers from bleeding out but their stitching is sloppy. And they are always shaking." Freya says

"Yeah but these girls came here to help, they want to save lives, but they've been sheltered all their lives, so war is new to them. They just came in a week ago." Patty says

"Well, I'm glad you are here, once the sun is up and we got our rest, we are training those girls." Freya says

"Yes ma'am." Patty says

Patty looked pleased.
