I awoke to the sound of a metal pipe banging against one of the bedframes on the far side of the room. I propped myself up on my elbows, turning my head to see the culprit standing near the entrance of the room with the murder weapon in his right hand.

"I want everyone in the Pit in ten minutes" Four barked, gazing over the room of sleepy teenagers that were annoyed with the way they had just been woken up.

As he stormed out of the room, his footsteps echoing in the night as we scrambled to get dressed and wake ourselves up. I pulled on a pair of dark maroon leggings, ones that hugged my curves tightly, and a long-sleeved black shirt made of a material I recognized as a product produced in Amity. It was light and breathable, snug to my body as I walked down the cave-like hallway with Al.

Christina, Will, and Tris were ready before me so I told them to go ahead. Al wanted to walk with me after hearing what happened with Peter yesterday afternoon and to be honest, I didn't mind his company. He was your quintessential boy next store. Although he seemed a bit nervous around women in general, he really was a sweet boy.

Al and I were apart of the last few initiates to enter the Pit, standing off to the side with the rest of our friends.

"Two stages of training. First is physical, pushing your body to the extreme and master all methods of combat. Second is mental, you'll explore your deepest and darkest fears. Dauntless training is all about pushing yourself to the breaking point. You'll be training separately from the Dauntless born but you'll be ranked together. Rankings determine things like what jobs you'll get after initiation. Leadership, guarding the fence, keeping the factionless from killing each other" Four explained, pacing back and forth in front of us.

"It also determines who gets cut" Eric added, everyone's attention suddenly on him.

"Cut?" Christina asked.

"At the end of each stage of training the lowest ranking initiates will be leaving us" he responded, stepping up next to Four.

"To do what?" Will asked, crossing his arms over his chest as he glanced down at Christina.

"Well there's no going back to your families so, you'd be factionless" Eric shrugged, not having much sympathy for the estranged initiates. "Why didn't we know about this?" an initiate, I believe his name was Drew, asked.

"It's a new rule" Eric quipped.

"A new rule? Someone should have told us!" Christina exclaimed, stepping forwards. Eric didn't take kindly to her gesture and I could see the anger festering in his eyes. I placed my hand on Christina's wrist and pulled her back, keeping her from doing anything she'd regret.

"Why? Would it have made you choose differently? If that's the case, you should probably get out now. If you're really one of us, it won't matter that you might fail. Alright, you chose us. Now we get to choose you" he spat, crossing his arms over his chest as a sense of dread and unease filled the cavern-like room.
