No-one new the outcome.

The boy sat in the centre of the field, smiling at the beauty of it as he hummed to himself, rocking back and forth on the heels of his feet, his eyes wide with excitement as a scent filled the air. He sniffed slightly, inhaling in the aroma, confusion flickering across his facial expression for a fraction of a second, before it vanished as though it was never there.

The scent of old death, layers and layers of aged blood piling ontop of eachother, the scent never leaving as it clung to their auras like a perfume- a stubborn stain that refused to dissapear, marking them forever. A sweet, beautiful perfume that was addictive like nothing else.

Someone was coming. Someone powerful.

And he loved it. He loved it so.

The figures drew closer and closer, every passing second bringing them nearer to the boy as he waited.  They were impatient, wanting to kill, wanting to gather money. But they pressed on, for it was close.

He waited for the display of death that would follow.

He waited for the blood.

He waited, unaware of what it would become.

——————————————————————————————————

They passed a tree, dried blood decorating the base.

They're close.

They passed a boulder, a bloody imprint of a body being dragged left on it.

Close.

A blood painted dent in a tree.

Close.

A trail of blood leading through a cluster of trees.

They're here.

His smile grew wider as his head started to sway, excitement at a boiling point. The wind began to howl and the trees rocked as though torn by fear at what was going to happen.

They're here at last.

The figures entered the clearing, only to stop, bodies tense as they observed the vision surrounding them. Nothing could have prepared them for the sight that greeted them.

Nothing.

For in the clearing, sat the boy, swaying from side to side slightly as he hummed a disturbing tune, a blood soaked shuriken spinning on one of his fingers as he stared at something in front of him, making no movement to acknowledge their presence.

But that wasn't what disturbed them.

That wasn't it at all.

The clearing was decorated with blood that was spread across to form an intricate symbol, that bore a resemlance to a skull. Decimated body parts were strewn across the symbol, drained of blood as they lay there uselessly. And the sheer stench of death filling the area was overwhelming, filling the air with it's odour as it all garnered there, left to layer itself into an aura of death, danger and destruction.

They exchanged slight glances as they observed the figure, a silent understanding filling them at the sight.

They had found him. They had found him at last.

——————————————————————————————————————-

The boy made no movement, no sound, no attempt to address them, until the Kakuzu spoke, his voice dark as his eyes narrowed at the boy:

"Our leader requires your presence."

The boy stopped humming, his head turning round slowly to face them as he stood, his head tilted as he stared at them, his purple eyes wide and disturbed as a childlike smile grew wider on  his features, his long hair matted with blood as it covered a fair amount of his face. He stood staring at them unblinkingly, his body rocking slightly as he waited. His voice was level, a slight musical tone to it as he spoke, his words dragged out unsettlingly:

"Why should I leave the blood?"

Time passed unnervingly, neither side moving as they stared at each other, before Kisame's voice intervened:

"He said to inform you that you would have a chance for more blood if you would consider it."

The boy remained swaying for a few moments, his face thoughtful before he moved closer, a smile forming on his face as he sniffed the air, before clapping his hands together in glee whilst nodding slightly:

"If there's blood!"

The two criminals exchanged glances of mingled confusion and doubt at the ease in which he had agreed, before Kisame spoke again, eyes narrowed as he stared at the boy in front of him:

"Are you sure, kid?"

The boy merely laughed, his voice echoing through the area, before his eyes closed in a seemingly innocent smile as he replied:

"Of course."

No-one realised the meaning behind those words.

And he laughed at their idiocy.

He laughed at them all.

For laughter is the perfect mask.
