Christmas for Emerald flew by, she had been staying at the Zabini household, for the majority of her time off something which delighted Mrs Zabini and thrilled Blaise even more so .It was like she'd never left.
Victoria Zabini watched them fondly as they packed up their belongings ready to go back to school, laughing and joking with each other, occasionally throwing the odd sock at each other playfully, she hadn't seen her son so happy and carefree in a long time, she knew how hard he took it when Emerald left and she had been worried he'd never get back to his normal cheeky self. Seeing them together reminded her of her former best friend that just so happened to be Emerald's mother.She smiled fondly at the memory.

The children had said goodbye to the woman-waving as they walked together towards the train. Emerald had experienced the best Christmas she had for a while almost managing to forget that night she had visited Malfoy Manor. She had told Blaise everything, he was shocked to say the least but he assured her everything would work itself out
If anyone's wired up right to be a Death Eater, it's Malfoy Blaise had told her, meaning it to come out as comforting but all it did was make Emerald feel sick to her stomach
No she thought he's not
She had managed to put all thoughts of Malfoy to the back of her mind ...that is of course until she saw him on the platform.
He looked different to the last time she had seen him, where his eyes usually contained a cheeky sparkle ,they were dull and lifeless and he wore an exhausted look on his face. She felt a twinge of guilt for the boy.
As they boarded the train she was engulfed in a hug from Pansy followed by one from Theo and a reluctant one from an awkward looking Marcus Flint, they found a spare compartment and took their seats, all of them chatting enthusiastically about the events of their summer, after a short while they were also joined by Crabbe and Goyle who squished into the end of the bench. Emerald watched as they spoke animatedly to each other, taking a quick glance at Theo to see how he was handling all of this, he was sat across from her with his mouth open while Flint tried to aim Bertie beans at his mouth.'He's fine' she smiled ,satisfied to herself that he wasn't being dragged down with his father or the dark side,and leaned back to put her head on Blaise's shoulder when all of a sudden he heard the door rattle open
Draco stood in the doorway looking round at the group "Come on Crabbe, Goyle I need to talk to you guys for a second" he ordered ,his eyes quickly settling on Emerald's before turning on his heel and walking down the carriage,Crabbe and Goyle following close behind him
"What the hell is up his ass" Pansy moaned
He had obviously been worrying about his tasks, Emerald's father had told her enough about the Dark Lord for her to know he had a plan for Draco, she just didn't know what.
Yet
....................
"Hello all and welcome back for another term at Hogwarts" Professor Dumbledore announced "we have some minor changes, The first of which being a late starting student transferred from the Saldern Academy of Magic in Germany " he announced
"There will now be a short sorting ceremony" McGonnagal carried on "Maya Richardson?" She called
Shyly, in walked a petite blonde girl ,she was shorter than average,around 5'3, her blonde hair swept up into a neat ponytail with a couple of strands loose to frame her face. As she walked up a few of the boys looked at her ,mouths slightly agape.Emerald looked over and saw Goyle looking star struck at the new girl.
She settled nervously into the chair and McGonnagal placed the hat onto her head, everyone watched intently as the hat muttered to itself for a few seconds before announcing her fate.
"SLYTHERIN"
The girl looked uneasy before slowly making her way to the Slytherin table ,she perched at the end of the table next to Goyle who looked like he might spontaneously combust earning them both a hateful glare from a certain Daphne Greengrass, making the already nervous girl shrink further into her seat.
Emerald noticed this and stuck her hand out over the table for the girl to shake
"Emerald ,Emerald Gaunt" she spoke smoothly
The girl nodded gratefully taking Emerald's hand to shake "Maya Richardson" she introduced herself "I've heard a lot about you and Pansy Parkinson, I think I'm supposed to be sharing your dorm" her voice wobbled a bit
"The more the merrier" Emerald said smiling at the girl
"Heard she's a mud blood"
"No way, they wouldn't put one of those in Slytherin!"
"Trust me I know what I heard"
Emerald overheard the conversation between Crabbe and Goyle and by the looks of the frown on his face, so did Blaise. Maya looked down again her cheeks going red
Emerald noticed Draco with his gaze on his plate not paying any attention at all.
Usually this was something he'd take great joy in making the girl feel as bad as he possibly could but something about him was different this year ,he was like shell of his former self.
Em turned her head to Maya
"You can tell them to shove off you know" Emerald told the girl ,quietly
"I can't" she spoke quietly
"Why not?"
"Because it's true!" She looked embarrassed
"So?"
Maya looked up in surprise, yet another person who was in disbelief that a Gaunt ,proudest Slytherin family by far, didn't immediately shun them for being associated with muggles or muggleborn.
The blonde brightened up a bit "it's just not really my thing, you know, confrontation" she whispered
Emerald nodded understandingly before locking eyes with Blaise and flicking her head to the side indicating at Crabbe
"Good job it's ours" she smirked
The larger Boy was just about to go into another one of his pureblood tantrums when Blaise forcibly shoved his head down into his dessert resulting in him getting a face full of chocolate cake.
"Wfagt tfre herl!" He spoke angrily with a mouthful of his dessert
"You talk to much" Blaise said bluntly ,winking at Em
"She's turned you into a real dick you know" Crabbe moaned, trying to lick the food off his own face.
Pansy looked triumphant, Goyle had an amused look on his face as he watched his best friend clean himself up, Flint had leaned over and high fived Blaise ,also tired of Crabbe's constantly bad attitude. Theo looked conflicted something that worried Emerald, maybe she had been wrong about his father's involvement with the Dark Lord not affecting him after all.
"So Maya" the other two girls pulled their schedules out ,unbothered by the bickering boys
"What lessons do you have today?"
