So, this was only supposed to be a single one shot but it sort of got away from me, and no I don't regret it. Thanks to moonqlow for helping me with the ending.

Butterflies danced in your stomach as you checked your phone for what felt the thousandth time. You were waiting for your boyfriend of a few months, Jay Halstead. The pair of you had meet in Molly's Bar, after being introduced by your neighbour Sylvie Brett. You were a novelist; you wrote a fantasy series as well as a few science fiction novels. You have met Sylvie when you moved into her building and across from her. Upon discovering she was a paramedic you had asked her all sorts of first aid questions. Generally, you bribed her with baked goods, but one time you had offered to buy her a few rounds as thanks. Sylvie had taken you up on the offer and had chosen Molly's. She had introduced you to everyone she worked with at the firehouse, including her best friend Foster. Throughout the night she had introduced you to her friends; the doctors and nurses from Med and a group of police officers, their squad was called Intelligence.

Over the last few months, you had become good friends with Sylvie's friend group. You had slotted into reasonably well and got on with everyone. One girl's night with Sylvie, Foster, Stella, April, Maggie, Natalie, Kim, and Hailey, you were all discussing past and current relationships, you had admitted to having a crush on Jay Halstead. Natalie who was currently dating the red-haired Halstead, and Sylvie who had become your best friend had both smirked when they had found out you had a crush on the dark-haired Halstead. While they were giggling at you with your blushing face in your hands, you missed the looks that Hailey and Kim sent each other. A few nights after the girl's night, you had bumped into Jay outside of a supermarket, you had just ducked into to grab a few essentials. "Jay, hey." He gave his usual lopsided smile, "Hey, Y/N." He had a shopping bag in his hand. "How have you been?" You asked as you started down the street. Jay nodded, "yeah, good." He stopped by his truck. "You want a ride home?" You shrugged, "it's just down the street, Jay. Think I'll be okay." Jay grinned at you, "yeah, but..." he ducked his head slightly, "I'd feel better if I drop you off." He grinned a little at you, "In case you haven't noticed, I have kind of a protective nature being a cop and all." You smiled at him and shrugged one shoulder, "well I wouldn't want to cause you any worry."

Jay chuckled as he opened his door after placing his shopping in the back, you opened your own and placed your own shopping at your feet. You slipped into the passenger seat; Jay pulled his truck out when you had clicked your seatbelt in place. Arriving outside your apartment was all too soon in your opinion. You hesitated when you got out, grabbing your shopping bags making sure they were secure in your grasp. "Night, Jay." You shut the door, before turning your back and walking towards your building. Upon hearing a shout of your name, you turned and saw Jay jogging over to you. He paused, "do you want to get dinner some time?" You ducked your head blushing, "yes, Jay. I would like to get dinner." Jay gave you a genuine grin, before walking you to the door of your building and holding the door open for you. That date was the first of many.

After dating Jay for a couple of months, his father died in his apartment fire. The resulting investigation of the arson had thrown the Halstead brothers into a spiral. You had shelved pieces of your life as well as parts of your relationship to help Jay and Will with anything they needed; mostly you just helped Jay deal with his own emotional fall out.

However, your own life had thrown a curveball at you at the same time. You had been offered the opportunity of a lifetime. The opportunity to write a book with your favourite author, to collaborate with this author was a dream come true for you. While you knew that Jay would not stand in your way, a part of you was still scared to tell him. When you had told him, he was thrilled for you, in fact he had insisted that you go to; he had practically bought the plane ticket for you. You had seen the looks that Intelligence and Will Halstead had thrown at you, when you had told them you had taken the interview with the author. Sylvie and the others were staying out of it, but they all supported you, nonetheless, Will also understood why you took the interview. You understood why the others were staying out of it, and you got why they were mad, but you felt like you didn't deserve the cold shoulders. When you had returned a week or so later, Jay was still dealing with his father's death; not that you had been expecting anything else.

It had been a few more months after the death of Pat Halstead, and you had helped Jay when you had gotten back with everything you could. One night, three weeks before Jay's birthday you had gotten to Molly's before him and while you were waiting you had struck up a conversation with a young man, they didn't recognise. Will was over at the bar; his jacket was over the seat beside you. Hailey had entered first with a few others from Intelligence and they all saw the young man hand you a folded sheet of paper, before he left his seat clasping a hand on your shoulder. He left Molly's, passing by the intelligence team. You looked at the piece of paper and beamed at it. Will re-joined you with his drink. This seemed to solidify the idea that you were simply using Jay for something, the team still couldn't quite figure out why an award-winning writer would fall for a cop.

Jay entered as the team were heading over to you and Will, as he slid onto the bar stool beside you that Will had vacated, he kissed your temple. You offered to get the first round for Intelligence, they all nodded with whispered thanks. Jumping off to get the drinks, Hailey, Kim and Adam noted that you slid the piece of paper into your back pocket. You came back with a tray of drinks which you handed off to everyone, as Stella passed by, she took the tray off you.

The current case that Intelligence was working had them all on edge and drinking more than their usual amount of coffee. During the few weeks before Jay's birthday, the team noticed you were acting different. You would disappear when answering phone calls as well as being late either to drinks at Molly's or meeting Jay after work.

A few days before Jay's birthday, you were anxious; practically jumping out of your skin whenever your phone rang, you hadn't managed to write a single word all day. Then you got the call you had been waiting for. Hailey was leaving a nearby coffee shop with Kim both had multiple coffees and pastries for the team, they were heading towards Hailey's car when they saw you. You were waiting for someone, as they watched you looked at your phone and a wide grin split your face when you saw whatever was on the screen. They ducked quickly into Hailey's car, hoping you hadn't seen them. "What do you think is going on?" They noticed the same young man who they had seen in Molly's walk towards you; a bag heavy with something by his side. He tapped you on the shoulder and you whipped around, before jumping into his arms. He handed you the bag and you looked into the bag before grinned madly, you hugged him once more and kissed him on the cheek.

Both Hailey and Kim sighed as they watched the young man walked away and you head towards your own car. "How are we going to tell Jay?" Kim's brow furrowed, "Should we, I mean we don't even know what's going on?" Hailey sighed once more, "I don't want him to get hurt again." Hailey shifted the car in drive as Kim steadied the drinks and food, they began the drive back to the district. "Are we going to tell Jay?" Kim asked, Hailey sighed as she parked the car. "I don't know, she obviously cares for whoever it was with her. She cares about Jay to, so I don't know. I think he needs to know about it." Kim sighed and they both began to head in bumping into Adam, both Kim and Hailey wanted to fill him in about what they saw, however, they both knew about his inability to lie to Jay.

Hailey lingered by Jay's desk as Kim finished handing out all drinks and food. She looked over at Voight's empty office, checking he wasn't there. "You need something?" Hailey paused once more; Jay met her eyes. "Are you sure, Y/N doesn't want anything from you?" Jay's brow furrowed, he looked confused. "Kim and I saw her, a few weeks ago taking to a guy at Molly's he handed her a piece of paper, we didn't think it was anything really, then today we saw her with him again, he handed her something in a bag." Jay's heart clenched; he didn't think that you would do something like this. Most of Intelligence was covertly eavesdropping, "Hailey..." Hailey sighed, "look Jay, I'm really sorry." Jay swallowed the choking lump in his throat. "I can be there when you talk to her if you want." Adam's chair scrapped back as he stood, "we all can if you want us." Kim shook her head, "we don't want to ambush her, that's not right." Hailey shrugged one shoulder, "we will all be there, Jay if you need us. It's your decision." Jay nodded, he slipped out his phone and sent you a text.
