It was my first day at Seirin Private High School, and I was pretty excited for it. Nervous too, but that was always normal with new things. I had gotten an email from the principal that he arranged for me to meet my interpreter before classes began to evaluate my needs as a deaf student in the school. It was actually pretty easy adjusting to it in primary and middle school so I knew that it would go fine this time too. The principal had also told me that there was a Hard of Hearing student coming in this year who knew sign language as well, and he wanted us to meet and help each other out.

I entered the main office and the secretary took me to the principal. He was sitting at his desk and there was a woman in one of the seats lining the wall.

"Good morning," I signed politely to the both of them.

The woman smiled and repeated the sign back to me. "Welcome to Seirin!" She put an emphasis on the 'welcome' sign to make it more excited.

I smiled, already liking my interpreter. "Thank you. Nice to meet you."

She introduced herself as Futaba-sensei and asked if I knew how to lip read, to which I said yes. I had started learning how to lip read in speech therapy when I was five alongside learning signs for words. She nodded and spoke to the principal, giving me a gesture that he was going to speak now.

I looked over at the principal and his lips moved rapidly, making my mind reel as I tried to process what he was saying, but it was futile. I had only grasped very few words and looked back to Futaba-sensei helplessly. "Slow," I signed, pointing to the principal. "Please."

She was already relaying my message to him. He blinked incredulously at her as if he'd never heard of such a thing, coughed awkwardly in his fist to clear his throat I assumed, and then looked back at me and tried again. This time he was much more understandable, and I nodded along to the conversation, adding signs when necessary which Futaba-sensei would translate for him.

We finished discussing my classes and how the year would go when the principal looked past my shoulder. I turned as well and saw a taller boy with tanned skin and bright black and red hair in the doorway. Was this the Hard of Hearing student?

The boy looked down at me and I gave a quick glance to Futaba-sensei. She smiled and nodded encouragingly at me so I looked back at the boy and gave him a smile as I signed to him. "Hi, my name is (L/n) (F/n). It's nice to meet you."

His eyebrows furrowed in confusion and he shook his head and put his fist up to his chest, making a circular motion. Then he brought his fist under his chin, his thumb pointed and jerked it outwards, and then his hand went to the side of his head and he extended his pointer finger up.

What kind of signs were those? I had no clue what he was saying. He had been speaking while he was signing, so I tried to decipher what he was saying by reading his lips.

"Sorry. . . don't. . ." was the most I got, the rest lost to me even though he spoke at a much better pace than the principal.

I shrugged helplessly and looked over at my interpreter. "I thought he knew sign language. I don't understand," I signed to her.

"He says he doesn't understand us either," she responded back quickly. She looked to the boy and they exchanged a few words before she turned back to me. "His name is Kagami Taiga. He is Hard of Hearing and just came back from America."

"America?" I frowned as I copied the sign. "He looks Japanese."

"He is Japanese. He moved there when he was a child and lived there until now."

It finally clicked why his signs were so strange. And why he didn't understand my signs. "He knows American Sign Language. Different country; different signs."
