Soulmate AU, in which each soulmate has a counter on their wrist with the number of steps away they are from their soulmate.

I sighed as I stared at the counter on my wrist. Most of my friends' counters displayed numbers in the hundreds. The highest I had seen from them was a few thousand, but then you had mine in the millions. Why did my soulmate have to be so far away? I doubt we were even in the same country.

"(F/n)!" My best friend burst into the classroom, bright eyed and smiling. "I found my soulmate! It's—oh, sorry." He/she stopped sheepishly, probably remembering my ridiculously numbered counter.

"It's alright," I said. It wasn't my friend's fault for finding his/her soulmate before mine. "Who is it?"

(Best friend name's) eyes sparkled once again, and he/she glowed with happiness. "It's (Student's name) from the year above us! I can't believe we never met each other properly until today."

"That's great!" I smiled. "I'm happy for you."

"Thanks! How's your counter?"

I sighed and showed him/her my wrist. "Still the same."

"I'm sorry," he/she said earnestly. "I hope you find him soon."

"Thank you." I gave him/her a forced smile this time. I had low hopes of meeting my soulmate, but that didn't mean I couldn't be happy for my best friend.

Our teacher walked in just then to begin our first class of the day, and (Best friend's name) went to his/her seat. I got out a pencil to write with and tugged my sleeve up, trying to ignore the vivid black number on my skin.

After all our lessons were done and the school day ended, my friend asked if I wanted to hang out but I politely declined. Instead, I walked to my favourite spot that overlooked the ocean. I leaned against the railing and looked out onto the horizon. The ocean was calm today, gentle waves ruffling in the light breeze. I let out a deep sigh as I looked down at my wrist again, the large number seeming to taunt me.

"Where the hell are you?!" I shouted at the ocean, but of course there wasn't an answer. Sighing in defeat, I turned to walk back home, the counter on my wrist ticking steadily on higher and higher.

The days passed by and more of my classmates united with their soulmates while my counter stayed stubbornly high. But there was something to occupy me from the growing dread that I would probably never meet my soulmate.

"Are you ready for the trip to Japan?" (Best friend's name) asked me during lunch one day.

"Yeah!" My school was organizing a senior trip to Japan where students from tenth through twelfth grade could participate in. We would be staying there for a few days to see famous landmarks.

My alarm rang nice and early the next day at five a.m. I turned it off and blearily shuffled around to use the bathroom and change my clothes. My parents were up too, my mom making breakfast while my dad would be driving me to the airport to meet up with my classmates.

As soon as I was dressed I went into the kitchen to greet them. My mom smiled and we all sat down together and ate quietly, only making small talk. It was serene and peaceful this early in the morning. We finished eating and I hugged my mom goodbye, and then my dad and I headed to the car. We put my luggage in the trunk and then set off to the airport.

It was still dark and grey outside, the sun not quite up yet. I was in the backseat of the car so I could take a nap more comfortably if I wanted to. I decided to check my phone and started scrolling through social media when a flicker of movement caught my eye. I turned my phone slightly to use the light from the screen to see and my jaw dropped. My counter was going down at a steady pace as my dad steered us on to the highway.
