I shoved my cold hands deeper into my pockets as I tried to ignore the sounds of dingling bells and cheery music coming from most of the overly decorated shops while walking home. It was almost Christmas in Japan and everyone was getting into the holiday spirit. Everyone except me though.

I shuffled through the snow and picked up my pace as I neared my street, desperate to be out of the biting cold. My small worn house stood wedged between two bright and fully decorated houses. The windows were dim, grey curtains drawn and as I unlocked the front door I noticed the white paint peeling in the corners.

I lived alone. I didn't have any siblings and my parents were abroad on company business. Them not being around much had contributed to my lack of holiday spirit. What was the point in celebrating if you had no one to do it with?

Shivering at the cold draft, I hurried to my bedroom and warmed up my hands by the small heater, rubbing the numbness away from each finger and joint until I was nice and toasty.

Since it was winter break, I had a ton of time to kill and I only had to go out on rare occasions to buy groceries and other essential items, along with the odd book or two I'd want. So I mostly spent my days playing video games or watching YouTube and Twitch.

I checked my social media apps for anything I missed since this morning as I waited for my computer to start up. An announcement notification from the official account of my favourite team of professional gamers, the Generation of Miracles, caught my eye. I clicked on the notification to read the post properly.

The Generation of Miracles are inviting fans to celebrate the holidays with them this year! If you'd like to join in on a night of fun and games with your favourite players, please answer the online form to be considered for an invitation! Twenty guests will be chosen to be invited. Invitations will be emailed within three days. Link to the form in our bio!

My eyes widened in disbelief after reading it. I could celebrate Christmas with the best professional esports team in the entire world? The Generation of Miracles had been dominating the league for the past few years in my favourite game that I played so passionately for hours almost every day. I looked up to the six players immensely for their talent and skill that had redefined the way the game was played.

The announcement had been posted two hours ago and had hundreds of replies in the comments section already. How many forms had they received since then? Would I have even a fraction of a chance to be with them this holiday season?

I looked around my bedroom and at the door that led to the rest of my bare and lonely living space. If anything could fix Christmas this year, it would be the Miracles. I had to at least try. I clicked on the account profile and submitted a form with my details.

Thank you for submitting a form for 'Holiday Season with the Generation of Miracles'! If you are one of our chosen guests, we'll send you an email soon!

Now all I could do was wait and hope the Miracles could be my saving grace.

The next three days were the most anxiety inducing moments of my life. Every notification on my phone or new email had me scrambling to check it, hoping that I'd get the one. At eight in the evening on the third day I had pretty much given up on getting an invitation to the gathering when the email came and it took all my willpower not to shriek in delight.

This Christmas would finally be different from all the other years spent alone with a tiny pine tree, mumbling carols and songs halfheartedly along to the radio. Just the thought of it made emotional tears well in my eyes. Instead of wiping them away I let them run down my cheeks as I relished the warm feeling throughout my body that I knew wasn't coming from the heater, and I went to sleep soundly that night.
