"I don't think that's how it works," Iskall pointed out, deciding to muffle his hope and be reasonable. "We need to make sure that they get out alive."

"Oh, yeah," Grian mumbled. "You're right."

"How about we leave it at this and continue End-busting?" Iskall suggested. "We can come back to it later. Maybe Xisuma will have some advice to offer." Grian nodded.

And that was that.

They continued raiding the cities and boats as if nothing happened, stopping partway through to go give elytra to Mumbo and Xisuma, informing them of what had happened.

No one really knew what to do, or what to think of what had happened.

All they could do was finish their journey, then head back to the server.

Although there was no battle, Iskall felt as if they had suffered a defeat.

Why?

POV Shift: Etho

"You said you had a plan!" Etho snapped. "It doesn't take that long to orchestrate a plan as simple as 'use the Watcher as a portal'!"

"I'm just trying to make sure no one dies!" Xay flashed. "We're stealing his energy, Etho. To transport from one dimension to another. I just want everyone to get through this!"

"And you never told me why you want to be on the server!" Etho continued, anger boiling inside of him. "What business do you have with the Hermits?"

"Hermit, actually," Xanthus's voice was nearly silent, enough to make Etho guess he wasn't supposed to hear that.

A crushing wave of doubt washed over the ninja.

Could Xay really be trusted?

"Which Hermit?" Etho asked, his voice soft, yet dangerous. "Who are you after?"

"You- I-" Xay stuttered. "I go through all the effort to try and save you, and you still don't trust me?"

"I-" Etho started.

"Save it!" Xanthus yelled, hurt in his voice. "What is up with you? I'm risking my life for you, and you're just leeching off of it! I could just go alone, you know! I could leave you here to rot, like you wouldn't mind doing to me!"

The words were like bullets.

Etho dodged them.

"How do I know you aren't just trying to gain my trust?!" Etho flared back. "How do I know you aren't just using me?!"

"How do you know I am? Oh, I know that one. Because I'm a Watcher. That's always how it is! Just because I'm a Watcher, that means I can't be trusted! Stop looking at me for what I am, and look at me for who I am as a person!" Xanthus shouted. Etho was shocked to see a tear slip out from under the mask.

He had never seen Xay cry.

"I... if you kill them, they're not coming back," Etho mumbled, the fight drained out of him.

"I wouldn't," Xanthus promised. "I've lost someone close to me, too."

"Really? Who?" Etho asked.

"Well, not lost," Xay said. "I- it was my brother. I haven't seen or talked to him in around six years." Etho's eyes widened at the confession. "He was my world. But then... well, we fought, to say the least. He left. I never saw him again after that, and I think he'd rather never see me again."

"I don't think that's true," Etho offered. Xay let out a small, pained chuckle.

"I'm not so sure about that," he muttered. "But I know what it's like to lose someone close to you. I swear, Etho, I don't want to go to your server to cause harm. I just want to... help. And I know that's what every villain says, but it's all I got."

"I believe you," Etho murmured.

I think.

I want to believe him.

But do I?

Xay and Etho are trying so hard to trust each other, but it's hard. They're working on it :D
