On Your Wedding Day

On your wedding day
I would not be that girl
All dressed up in lovely white
For instead I would be the "best man"
Standing by your side

On your wedding day
I would recite out the words
The speech one would give
After being rehearsed
To wish you well
And for a life full of love

But on your wedding day
Those words would not be
Of memorised verse
Instead,
They would come straight from my heart
As I bid a silent farewell
To our memories from the old, forgotten years

And on your wedding day
I shall force a smile
Plastered across my face
Refusing to let
The tears run down
My pale and saddened
Ill-stricken face

For on your wedding day
Once this dreary celebration is finally done
I shall silently slip away
Knowing you would not even notice
That your "best man" is gone

For on your wedding day
Once I am home alone
I shall weep myself to sleep
Longing for your warm embrace
Knowing you would no longer be the one for me
Despite my desperate hopes
And unspoken pleads
