When Sophie got outside her old home, she couldn't bring herself to go in.

First of all, she'd have to explain her wacky life to her old human parents.

Second of all, they might remember the torture they'd went through a few weeks ago.

And third of all, she couldn't risk having a Washer come because they would find out where she was and try to convince her to come back.

Like that was happening in the century.

She walked away, thinking about what she had to do in order to survive.

She would have to rent (or buy, but that wasn't happening) a place to live. She needed money, meaning she needed a job. She would also have to go to school, even if the work for her grade was too simple for her. She wouldn't have time for hard homework anyway if she had a job.

She needed a place to stay while she got a job to pay for a place to stay.

Sophie wasn't sure who to contact because she had no friends when she lived there a few years ago.

Then she remembered that she'd brought some human money. I guess that'll do, Sophie thought.

She walked around the city, looking for an apartment complex to rent in. Sophie found herself wondering in a beautiful complex. It was called Riverside Rents.

It was made from glass from top to bottom, the interior shining from the sparkle of the sun. It was the type of glass that the outside couldn't see the inside but the inside could see the outside.

This might be a little pricy, Sophie thought. She walked in the glass doors.

There was a very nice lady there, with a bright smile and dark brown hair. She reminded Sophie of Della.

No need to get caught up in the past, Sophie thought, especially if you've left that life.

"Hello, how can I help you?" The lady asked, smiling brightly.

"Can a rent a one bedroom apartment?"

"Well, of course you can! Would you like to know the price for one month?" She asked.

"Yes, please, ma'am."

"Oh, please, you are too kind! Drop the ma'am. It costs five hundred dollars a month with utility bills included."

Sophie made the calculations in her head. The price was actually very good for a glass apartment complex.

"Ok, I would like to rent one." Sophie said, her mind made up.

"You have to be at least 18 years of age..." the lady said, trailing off. Sophie gut sank into the hole of doom.

"BUT I'll make an exception! You are such a kind young lady. Here are your keys." She said, handing Sophie a key.

"Rent is due at the end of each month. Each late day requires a $35 fee. Sorry, that's my boss' rule."

Sophie smiled back, thanked her, and went up the elevator to her room.

It had such beautiful granite counters for the bathroom and the kitchen. The fridge was very clean and shiny. It looked very new.

She looked in the bedroom. There was a bed and a closet.

She sighed. Maybe her life was getting better.

Later that day, in the late afternoon, she made her way to the library to register herself for school and work applications.

She later went home that night, thinking what she had done to deserve such a good life. Sophie wasn't hungry that night, so she just showered and went to bed.

She went to sleep, thinking just maybe she would be alright in this diverse world.
--------------------------------------

Sophie opened her eyes. She blinked, remembering all the fortunate things that had happened to her the day before.

She would start school tomorrow, but today she had a work interview. It was for a restaurant named Shaky Shakes and Burgers.

She dressed in some of the not-so-elvin clothes she had brought. It was just a long shirt and some leggings, casual but not formal.

She walked to Shaky Shakes and Burgers. She was asked questions like 'Why do you want to work here?' and 'Who are your parents?"

She'd made up some names for her parents. She had made their names Rometadi and Bomeradi Spagheterri. The person asked "Spaghetti?" and Sophie had replied "No, not Spaghetti. It's Spa-ghet-er-ri."

Sophie had passed her interview and would start working after school the next day. On the way home, she went to the store to get some fruits because things were so overpriced that she would just stick to eating fruits.

Walking home, she smiled.

She had a home.

She had a school.

She had a job.

Maybe, after all these years, she would be in peace?

Without the Neverseen?

Without boy problems?

That is the life she wants.

But will never have.

After she showered, she made a promise to herself.

She wouldn't be Sophie Foster, the moonlark and hero of the Black Swan.

She would be Sophie Foster, the strong willed teenage girl in San Diego.

She would fight back.

She would be strong.

And she would be her.

All. She'll. Ever. Need.

Starting tomorrow, she would go to school.

Starting tomorrow, she would go to work.

Starting tomorrow, she would be an average teenage girl.

Starting tomorrow, she would be herself.

Drifting off to sleep, she dreamed of being normal.

But she didn't know that it was impossible.
