Tomorrow comes, and at his gathering
our Preacher tells the Silt the plan to give
his sermon one day earlier next week,
and once declar'd, the page forever's ink'd.
The week proceeds and now the day hath come
for him to host his mass again in church.
Our Preacher gazes o'er his chapel's pews
and marvels at the grandeur of his house,
so little maybe still, but growing large
in width at least and with a colour'd pane 10
above the entry doors depicting Sky
and Sea and Earth—th'horizon's meeting edge
at which the three converge when gazing out
across the ocean from a spot ashore,
and in the Sky are sun and also moon
to signify the struggles of the soul.
He looks about and notes how rather squat
the chapel is and thinks that next he'll buy
the buildings in behind his house t'expand
his chapel farther back. Perhaps as well 20
when this is done he'll add a second tier
of pews above the first. But he'll need stairs
for that to be accomplish'd, which require
additional of space as well, he would
suppose, but O, he'll worry in a year,
as first he'd like t'expand the length. Then height.
It's during all these thoughts the entrance swings,
for though it's early yet, they are unlock'd,
for th'house of worship's open on this day
for service coming in half hour's time. 30
Our Preacher shifts his roaming gaze toward
the patron entering his chapel's doors
and finds his friend the Chaplain coming in.
He spreads his arms upon his friend's approach
toward the dais down the aisle's strip
of regal carpeting and greets him with:
"A pleasantest surprise to see thee here,
my friend. To what should I attribute thy
most welcome coming to my chapel house?
As never hast thou ere decided come 40
to hear a sermon I deliver out,
for wholesome reasons, I am so aware.
Perhaps thou hast determin'd that my faith
and following have grown to large enough
that thy beguiling presence won't distract
my followers so much that thou art forc'd
