National Technology Day is celebrated on 11th May every year to appreciate and highlight the achievements of Indian Scientists and engineers in the field of Science and Technology.
On 11th May 1998, India became the nuclear power state by successfully performing the three Nuclear tests at Pokhran, Rajasthan. The team successfully test-fired the Shakti-I nuclear missile under the leadership of Missile Man of India and late former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam.
On 13th May 1998 exactly two days later, as a part of the same Pokhran-II/Operation Shakti initiative the team successfully tested two more nuclear weapons.
After successful completion of tests, Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee declared India a nuclear state then India became the 6th country to join the 'nuclear club' of nations.
The key people behind the victory of “Operation Shakti” were APJ Abdul Kalam- Chief of DRDO, R Chidambaran- Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission, K Santhanam- Mission Director, and Anil Kakodhar- Director of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC).

Apart from this, India has tested its first indigenous aircraft 'Hansa-3' which flew from Bengaluru, Karnataka on May 11th, 1998. Further after successful testing of Hansa-3, India successfully performed test firing of Trishul Missile.

This day is the most important day for Science and Technology in day-to-day life. To honour all the techies and this day, a National Award has been instituted by Technology Development Board (TDB). Every year since 1999, the board selects the theme for each year’s event but this year there is no specific theme, however, the theme for Science Day is “Future of STI: Impacts on Education, Skills and Work”.
This award is presented to all the techies for their substantial contribution to the field of Science and Technology.
National Technology Day is an auspicious day to celebrate India’s scientific & technological developments in the field of Science & Technology. It is also a small way to commemorate the visionary leadership of late Shri Vajpayee Ji and Dr Kalam sir for their contribution in making India a nuclear power state.
