“Reject, not regret.”

Around the world no tobacco day is celebrated every year on 31st of May to mark the fight against tobacco addiction and harmful effects of it. The day is further used to draw attention towards the tobacco epidemic. In 1987, Member states of WHO first announced no tobacco day. It was to make people realise the worth of their lives and of people around them.

It’s a registered fact that every year more than 8 million people die because of harmful effects of tobacco and 1.2 million more get serious breathing problems just because of the smoke they encountered.

Tobacco smoke is said to contain around 70 chemicals and could even cause cancer. Now I don’t need to talk or make anyone here aware of cancer, do I? One of the most harmful chemicals in tobacco is nicotine. Nicotine is a highly addictive psychoactive drug and when that goes into the human body it could cause serious physical and psychological problems.

The irony is, tobacco use is the single greatest cause of preventable death globally, which means that we hold the power to save the lives of those 8 million people every year. It’s recorded that more than half of the tobacco taking people die only because of its side effects, then why are we playing with our lives like that? Smoking is a major risk factor for infections like pneumonia, heart attacks, strokes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

I don’t think any one of us could forget that depressing ‘Mukesh Advertisement’ before movies. It’s shown for a reason, to raise awareness among the youth and to save lives every year. With WHO’s help, many countries have taken measures against it. Be it printing warning signs on packets or sales restriction, but no organisation or country could do it without the people coming together and fighting in.

Every year there are many advertising and campaigns held to spread awareness. Encouraging teachers and parents to look out for teens and their habits. Studies show that most people who smoke started when they were teenagers, so it gets more important to help the present to save the future.

The new trend of vaping is pulling teenagers into the dark hole of addiction but together we can fight it. Don’t fall for tobacco companies advertisements of flavors and designs. Neither when you see any celebrity smoking in movies or web-series.

It’s bad, periodt.

Help yourself and your friends. If you see them getting addicted, look for measures and even rehabs if needed. Everyone can fight it till they are breathing and we all can together make a tobacco free world. -Zyanya

STATUTORY WARNING:
'Tobacco consumption is injurious to health, it causes cancer!'

It is just a written warning on the packet that no one even looks at or these are mere few words for Tobacco users.

Do you know?
Around 8 million people die every year due to Tobacco consumption.
"Is Tobacco more precious than life?"

What is Tobacco?
Tobacco is the popular term for several plants of the Nicotiana genus and the Solanaceae family.
In simple terms, it is a plant that contains nicotine, a mind-altering drug, that fastens the movement in our central nervous system but has soothing effects too.
It is also the broad phrase used for the products made from the cured leaves of the Tobacco plant. Dried Tobacco leaves are largely used for smoking in cigarettes and cigars, as well as pipes and shishas. They are also consumed as snuff, chewing Tobacco, dipping Tobacco and snus.

Tobacco contains highly addictive nicotine. Tobacco consumption causes many deadly diseases; especially those affecting the heart, liver, and lungs, as well as many cancers majorly including throat cancer, lung cancer and stomach cancer.

Why No Tobacco Day?
World No Tobacco Day is observed on 31st May every year. World No Tobacco Day was first celebrated in 1987 by the member state of WHO. The day has been joined with enthusiasm by governments all around the globe, public health organizations and NGOs but it faced resistance around the globe from smokers, growers, and the Tobacco industry.

Every year WHO sets a theme to spread the same message around the globe. This year the theme of World No Tobacco Day is 'Quit Tobacco to be a Winner!'

The Objective of observing this day yearly is:
To inform the world about the threats of consuming Tobacco,
To tell people about the measures WHO is taking to protest the Tobacco epidemic, and
