International Yoga Day, a day to celebrate the importance of keeping oneself physically, spiritually, and mentally fit by the practice of the age-old system of Yoga. A form of exercise that does not focus solely on physical fitness, Yoga is said to have originated in the land of India over 5000 years ago. Hence, keeping the antiquated tradition alive and helping the upcoming generations with solving their mental, spiritual, and physical woes by the accurate practice of Yoga, the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, in his UN address, proposed that 21st June be celebrated as the International Yoga Day world over.

The United Nations, in December 2014, accepted the draft resolution proposed by India along with unanimous support from other countries, and hence 21st June came about to be known as International Yoga Day and has been celebrated since 2015. Finally, Yoga got branded as India’s culture and heritage, and we can proudly showcase to the world that our history, which can be traced back to multiple millennia, is rich and full of surprises.

Since its inception, this day has been celebrated with much vigor, with Yoga enthusiasts from the world over practicing the most complex of the Yoga asanas with much ease and newcomers learning the tricks of the asanas. Yoga is said to help achieve a state of mental and spiritual tranquility and has recently been popularized in Western countries too.

This year, on 21st June, people from across the world will once again come together and practice the asanas with much enthusiasm. Also, the day has been chosen after careful consideration. 21st June is the one day in the year when the day is the longest and night is the shortest, which from a Yoga perspective is of huge significance since it is said that the original practice of Yoga commenced on the first full moon after the summer solstice.

So, on this 21st June, let us all come together to meditate and practice Yoga to keep ourselves healthy in every sense of the term. Also, let’s not forget, Yoga can make our taut muscles flexible, too, helping us keep multiple types of diseases at bay.

Take care of yourselves and don’t forget to exercise!
