The Universe has embedded within itself so many secrets that astronomy enthusiasts have since time immemorial tried to decipher secrets that enthrall us and force us to wonder more about what lies undiscovered. And astronomy is just about that. It is the science of studying celestial and non earthly objects like the planets, stars and their movements and other such events like eclipses and meteor showers.
And to connect and establish interactions between the general public and the eminent astronomy enthusiasts, professionals and astronomy groups about this amazing science, the Astronomy Day was started in the United States in 1973, by Doug Berger, the president of the Astronomical Association of Northern California. The day was later adopted by various other nations to awaken interest among the masses about astronomy.
It usually takes place between mid April and mid May on or before the first quarter moon. The day is a semi-annual affair, falling in both Spring and Fall season. The date changes according to the lunar influence on the schedule, and does not have any fixed calendar date.
Easily accessible telescopes are set up in museums, observatories, schools and other such places around the world so that people can observe the sky during the day and night. Lectures, essay writing competitions and the like are held in cultural events to mark this day.
So take out those binoculars or telescopes, go stargazing (obviously keeping the covid guidelines in mind), delve deeper and immerse yourself into deciphering the secrets that the universe withholds within itself.
