I was standing in the center of the room; a cellphone ringtone had echoed loudly; each bounce off the wall helps it to get louder as they slowly made my ears deaf. I turned around. My eyes spotted a smartphone on a personal office desk. It was not vibrating however the screen shows a length of numbers with a shadow face as an icon.
My heart throbbed; an unexplainable, excruciating pain had occurred from within. I remember chanting, 'I do not want to pick that up.'
Light bulbs started to flicker in a fast motion. The walls started moving closer, closer, and closer to me. I felt my breath hitched upon realizing they were pushing me towards the phone that I did not want to answer. I put all my pressure on my feet, hoping it will cause rough friction to slow and stop me from going forward. However, my hopes are in vain when my hand forcibly picks it up. I pulled it over to my ear to hear the caller, but it was silent.
There was this distinct sound coming from the other side as if it was a call from the void. I could hear some familiar noise slowly getting on the phone's speaker.
Hearing my heartbeat makes it even more uncomfortable. It made me feel that someone, in this small room, is watching over me and I could not see them nor hear them. It was the worst kind of anxiety.
I do not want to hear this silence.
Truth be told, I wanted to put down the phone on the desk. I wanted to push these walls and make them a suitable room for a normal person; a room size like a lift does not help me to stabilize my breathing. I wanted myself out of here. Any room is fine except here.
My hands held the phone tightly; it was still over my ear for who knows how long. It was until then; someone's voice had finally spoken over the phone.
