When one receives a second chance to live their lives in another world, people were thrilled. They gawk their eyes at every little thing. Immediately accepts even the things that are truly questionable and unforgiving to human nature. People reasoned that it is a fantasy world! Surely anything can be possible! They can seduce fictional men they find attractive or better yet, appear mysterious; the know-it-all type of a guy just for the fact they knew what kind of future will play out in their world.
Edogawa Ranpo did not find any kind of those traits in Sakuya.
He never intended to discover that fact. It seems the information had paved its way for him in such an unexpected manner. He never knew the existence of people remembering their previous lives. He just simply found himself investigating one man who got shot after having an argument with another adult. His mind told him this will be a worthy cause to put his magnifying glass. Thus, he met Sakuya who falls under the same category.
She was too cynical to be trapped in the body of a child. Anyone would be displeased to see a child being apathetic to care about the world they live in. Christian devotees surely lose their minds if they find out the redhead had a misotheistic view of God. He likes her. Whether he is aware of it romantically or not; he simply knew he likes her the moment her eyes brimmed with caution and treated him as an equal.
Adults never had the brain to consider anyone on the same level, yet Sakuya does. Ranpo finds her complexity paralleled to his own. To him, Sakuya has a heart of ice, and she isn't interested in things she does not find advantageous, yet she strives to learn everything all at once, familiarizing herself with things she thinks she will use in the future. An obsession to ease her fear that one day, she will meet the same fate as her previous.
Therefore, Oda Sakuya is an adult.
That is one of the reasons why he thinks they needed each other. Ranpo waited for a week for her to wake up from her soundless slumber. He wonders what kind of dream she is having for her to move her fingertips. He hopes it was a good dream because he has no idea how to give her the grave news about her older brother. He was not great at relaying emotional words. Yet, he tried ways that he thought will improve the situation. He tried to stop her older brother. The man was on his track to committing mass murder as his revenge. However, despite the act of purposely bumping into him, telling him that death only waits at the other side of his door, Oda Sakunosuke still went to fight Mimic.
Today, he cannot do anything for her. He sat there. Powerless; waiting for her to wake up. Yosano told them that they did not know how long she will sleep. Then, it was night. The monitor suddenly went erratic, displaying a fast heart rate of Sakuya. Then it stopped.
A sensation of relief washed him over. He could not bear the idea of her being in this state. Despite her being nearly immortal, he does not want another person close to him to suffer in such a state. He had enough of it.
He watched Sakuya sit up so suddenly. Her hands quickly pulled out all intravenous lines attached to her; she did not care if it bleeds, she put her legs to the side of the bed and attempted to run out only for her frail legs to fail her, causing her to trip unintentionally. Ranpo went over to her, he hears soft sobs from the woman. He felt his heart sink.
He knelt to match her level. Sakuya immediately grabbed his shoulders, clenching tightly as her eyes brimming with tears upon realizing devastating information that Ranpo had not yet revealed. So how did she-
"My brother..." She could not breathe; she needed air with so much crying. "Please...tell me where he is..."
The young man could not find the words anymore. He could not bring out the news to do so. Sakuya watched his partner fall into grave silence. She shook her head. Unable to accept the silence as an answer, "No. God, please no."
That night, Sakuya wailed. She continued to rely on Ranpo as her support. Her hand was bleeding, yet the man did not mind it at all. He pulled her closer to him. Sakuya accepted his embrace and cried even louder. He did not mind how her hands turned into a fist nor how sharp her claws were on his back. No matter how much mess she shows, he remained silent. It was the only help he can offer.
Oh, how their roles were reversed; the child gets to comfort an adult.
Ranpo could feel the pain whenever Sakuya cries out in agony. It was painful for him; to hear her despair, to watch her fear manifest in the most excruciating show possible. He let his hands soothe her back as he patiently waits for her to subside.
A few days later, as soon as she was discharged, Sakuya filed a resignation letter to Armed Detective Agency.
