May comes around, and there have been no attacks since before Christmas break. Everyone's really starting to forget that it ever happened.
The first quidditch game of 1993 is approaching: Gryffindor vs Hufflepuff.
On the morning of the game, I walk up to Oliver in the Great Hall to wish him good luck. He's sitting with his team, making sure they're all eating a hearty breakfast.
"Hey, Wood!" I say as I approach him.
He turns around. "Alright, Parker?"
"Good luck at your match today," I say.
"Thank you," he nods. "I was wondering- do you want to go up to my dormitory with me for a second? I forgot my lucky socks."
"You have lucky socks?" I ask, scrunching up my nose.
"You don't?" he counters.
He finishes his breakfast and we set off for his dormitory.
"Is Percy there right now?" I ask.
"He's studying with Penelope in the library," Oliver says.
"Ah, he won't be able to tell us off, then," I grin.
"Oh, good; I'm terrified of being told off by Percy," he laughs.
"Why do you need me to go with you?" I ask.
"I'm afraid of ghosts; you know this," he smiles.
"Are you afraid of ghosts or do you just like being with me?" I ask.
"Same thing," he grins.
"Not really-"
"Nice weather today, isn't it?" he asks.
I laugh, taken aback by the sudden subject change. "Yeah, perfect for quidditch playing, I'd say."
"We've got this game in the bag," he nods.
"I reckon you'll do alright," I say.
"Very encouraging words."
"Positive affirmation is rare from me," I remind.
"True; I should write all your compliments down so I can cherish them forever and ever."
"Put it in our old person scrapbook," I laugh.
"We're going to have to actually make that now, you know," he says.
"I think that would be fun," I nod.
We reach the Gryffindor dormitory. I follow Oliver up to his dormitory.
"I'm still very impressed by the quidditch shrine," I say.
"It's hard not to be impressed with me," he shrugs.
"Oh my God, okay," I laugh, scrunching up my nose.
He digs around in his drawers a bit, finally pulling out an old and smelly looking pair of socks.
"Those look disgusting."
"It's tradition, Laurie," he says, pulling them on his feet.
"Wash your hands now," I grin, shaking my head.
"You women and your hygiene," he sighs, walking into the bathroom.
I lean against his bedpost and pick at my fingernails while I wait for him to finish. He walks out, ruffling his hair with his hands.
God, I love it when he does that.
"What are you looking at me like that for?" he asks, grinning.
"Hm?"
"Nothing," he shakes his head, glancing away for a second.
I nod, pursing my lips.
"Hey, Laurie?" he asks, stepping closer.
"Yeah?"
"I-" he takes a deep breath, stepping closer again.
I feel a large pit form in my stomach. Whether from dread, nerves, or excitement, I can't tell. Maybe a mix of all of it.
"Here," he mumbles, cupping my cheek with his hand.
Suddenly, he's very close to me. His lips are very close to me.
I can feel his breath on my skin. I can make out all of the imperfections and flecks on his face.
I don't know how long he's this close to me. It must have been just a second, because, before he can actually make contact, I plant my palms on his chest and shove him away. Hard.
"What are you doing?" I ask, backing away.
"Laurie, I-"
I make a beeline for the door, my head racing.
He calls after me, but, before I can process any of what he's saying, I'm out the door.
What the hell was that?
Who does he think he is?
Why did he do that?
Why did I do that?
Don't I like him?
Isn't that what I wanted?
I shouldn't have pushed him away.
Unfortunately, I don't get much more time to dwell in my thoughts, because, as I pass the library, I'm met with a horrifying sight:
There's been another attack.
