ℕ𝕒𝕞𝕛𝕠𝕠𝕟 𝔻𝕒𝕪 𝕊𝕡𝕖𝕔𝕚𝕒𝕝

"Your move." Namjoon said. It was a rainy day in Paris and everyone except Namjoon and Y/N were suffering from jet lag. They had been out like logs ever since checking into the hotel, which was about an hour before. Therefore, Y/N, who was used to all-nighters, and Namjoon, who couldn't sleep a wink, were playing chess in Namjoon's hotel room. Lofi music played in the background, accompanied by the pitter patter of rain outside. The atmosphere was soothing.

Y/N hummed as she stared at the placement of each and every one of Namjoon's chess pieces. She just couldn't figure out his strategy. After a few more seconds of observing, she moved her pawn forwards. Namjoon smiled as he moved his bishop. "Checkmate." he declared. Y/N blinked in shock. Her eyes darted at all the pieces that could kill her king. "Ah, that's 5-0 now..." she muttered. She wondered where it had gone wrong. She clearly remembered having more pieces on the board, but in a blink of an eye, they were all gone. If there was one thing Y/N sucked at the most, it would probably be chess.

"There's no need to feel down, Y/N-ie... Practice makes perfect." Namjoon comforted. She's surprisingly quite bad at it... Y/N sipped on her cup of earl grey tea, thinking about how she could improve. Seeing her struggle, Namjoon chuckled and ruffled her hair. "How about I teach you how to play?" Namjoon asked the girl. She nodded enthusiastically and reset the board. Ah, she's way too cute...

"Ok, so first off I'll re-brief on the basics. Your bishop can only move diagonally while your knight can only move in an L shape. The rookie can move both horizontally and vertically. Your pawn can only move forward a step at a time, but it kills diagonally. Got it so far?"
"Yup!"
"Your king can only move one step, but it doesn't matter which direction it goes. Your queen can move in any direction, except the L shape, no matter the amount of steps. Any questions?"
"Nope!"
"Ok then, let's get started on strategies you can use."

Namjoon spent an hour and a half teaching Y/N the different strategies of chess. At times, she'd get confused and Namjoon would have to explain it further, but he didn't mind. She was actually quite a quick learner and understood most of it almost immediately. They refilled their tea many times throughout the session, and the music in the background was forgotten as the only thing they heard was each other's voices.

"I think I'm ready to play now, oppa." Y/N spoke with confidence. Namjoon nodded and reset the board. "Black or white?" he asked her. "Black, please." And with that the game started.

"Ah, I lost again..." Y/N said. She was more disappointed in this round than the first 5 times she lost. She was disappointed that she still couldn't get the hang of it even after Namjoon spent his time and effort explaining everything to her clearly. Namjoon sighed at her pessimism. He got out of his chair and knelt in front of the girl.

He pinched her cheeks. "Ow..." the girl winced. "No more negative thoughts, baby!" he grinned. The pair laughed at each other's antics and the slightly gloomy atmosphere faded into one of joy.

They spent the rest of their free day reading books together and talking about random topics.

"Hey, oppa?"
"If toxic men think they're so great... Why don't they look at a chess board?"
"Why do you say that?"
"Well, the king is the weakest piece on the board, while the queen is one of the strongest."
"Fair point."

It was rare that she got moments with each one of her soulmates individually, but she cherished them as much as she cherished the moments the 8 had together.
