Aniu's POV
So I'm sure you've all heard about my uncles Kenai and Denahi. As well as my father Sitka. Well I am his nine year old daughter Aniu. My mother died last winter. So now dad has to take me everywhere. Including hunts. Which is where we are now. We're on a fishing expedition with my uncles. When we get back to the village uncle Kenai will be getting his totem. Dad and Uncle Sitka already have theirs. Dad has the Eagle of Guidance and uncle Denahi the Wolf of wisdom. I wear mum's totem the bear of love. But I won't know what my totem is until I'm older. Only the ancestors and great spirits know.
Mum helped a mother bear give birth before winter. She had been out foraging when she came across the mother bear. She had told me the story every night before her death. The bear cub was breached and she had to turn it around. So that the mother bear could give birth. The mother bear had a healthy little boy. Mum got some fish and berries for the mother bear. Before leaving her to it and returning home.
Anyway we're near the falls. Uncle Kenai said he needed a toilet break. So I'm minding the canoes with dad and uncle Denahi. "Now remember the rules Aniu, you stay on the shore while we fish. Stay in our sights at all times" dad tells me.
"I know dad" I assure him.
"What's taking Kenai so long?" Uncle Denahi grumbles.
"Get down!" we hear someone shouts.
"What?" dad says and we turn to see uncle Kenai.
"Kenai!" uncle Denahi shouts.
"Get down, get down!" he shouts to us. We see a herd of caribou stampeding behind him. We take cover behind the canoes. Dad holding me in his arms shield me with his body. As Kenai joins us laughing his head off. The caribou leave and I notice uncle Denahi rubbing his head.
"Are you ok Aniu?" dad asks me concerned and I nod my head.
"Never try to milk a caribou" Uncle Kenai tells us.
"Even I know that one uncle" I tell him. Uncle Denahi tackles him to the ground. They begin to wrestle. Uncle Denahi soon has him pinned and starts to drool.
"Don't. No. Come on" uncle Kenai whines trying to break free. Dad pulls them about.
"Will you two knock it off?" he demands.
"That's all right, Sitka. After today, he won't treat me like that anymore" Uncle Kenai states.
"Right. The big manhood ceremony. It doesn't matter what the spirits say. You'll always be our baby brother" uncle Denahi teases.
"Oh, yeah? Well, wait until I get my totem" uncle Kenai tells him hotly.
"Baby brother" Uncle Denahi teases. They go to lunge as each other again as I chuckle. Dad grabs them and rams their head heads together. Before putting them both in a head lock.
"Hey, I said knock it off" he tells them. "You both are setting a bad example for Aniu" he states. "Now, the quicker we get these fish, the faster we're going to get to your ceremony, so let's all just try to get along for a few hours. OK, Denahi?" he asks.
"Whatever you say" uncle Denahi says. As I notice uncle Kenai slips out of my dad's hold. He ran to the canoes and grabbed his. Heading fro the water.
"Ok Ken..." dad starts to say and realizing uncle Kenai is no longer in a head lock.
"Over there dad!" I say pointing to the water.
"So, what are we waiting for?" Uncle Kenai asks us. Dad lets uncle Denahi go and picks me up running to our canoe. As we both laugh. We all get into the canoes and set off.
"Whoo!" we all cheer. We row down the river past the glacier. When we reached the falls. I clung to my dad's back as they jumped down the falls from rock to rock. Uncle Kenai nearly fell, but dad caught him and we all laughed & cheered. We continue of foot until we reached the top of a snow bank that lead to the sea.
We got into our canoes and slide down it into the water. "Yea, again again!" I cheer as they all laugh. We row to the stream where the salmon are. I stay on the shore while dad fished with Uncle Denahi.
"Hey, what to do something fun?" Uncle Kenai asks me.
"Sure" I say. He leads me to a herd of mammoths. "What are we doing?" I ask him as I eye the herd warily.
"We're going to rid a mammoth, your dad and I used to do it all the time" he tells me. He approaches it giving it some food. Uncle Kenai lifts me onto the mammoth before climbing on behind me. "Hold on tight" he tells me and gets the mammoth to head for the stream. The mammoth runs in between dad and uncle Denahi.
"Dad, look at me!" I cheer giggling. He looks at me and shakes his head chuckling. I notice a branch and duck. But uncle Kenai, doesn't and falls off the mammoth. Dad stops it and helps me down. He and Uncle Denahi finish fishing & we begin the journey home.
On the way we pass a pack of orca. Who swim beside us. They were beautiful. Uncle Kenai splashes Uncle Denahi, who then flips his canoe. But he and dad flip it back up. I notice home and smile as I snuggle into my dad. I wonder what Uncle Kenai's totem will be?
